Discover the words in the Connections yellow category

The yellow grouping is considered the simplest. The theme for today’s yellow group is BEDDING, and the words are: COMFORTER, SHAM, SHEET, THROW.

Connections green category words and their meanings

The green grouping is the second easiest. The theme for today’s green category is OSCAR WINNING ACTORS SINCE 2010, and the words are: BALE, JORDAN, PHOENIX, WALTZ.

Learn about the terms in the Connections blue category

The blue grouping is the second hardest. The theme for today’s blue category is PERFORMING SOME HOLE MACHINING OPERATIONS, and the words are: BORE, COUNTERSINK, DRILL, REAM.

Connections’ purple category: the most challenging words

The purple grouping is considered the most complicated. The theme for today’s purple category is STARTING WITH BREAD SHAPES, and the words are: BOULEVARD, BUNDLE, LOAFER, ROLLS-ROYCE.

How to crack today’s Connections: the strategy for victory

I identified a possible category of actors who won the Oscar: Christoph WALTZ, Christian BALE and Joaquin PHOENIX. There was a fourth one missing, which was Michael B. JORDAN. It was the first successful attempt.

SHAM, THROW, SHEET and COMFORTER could all be types of bedding.

Then I realized that REAM, BORE, DRILL and COUNTERSINK are terms related to drilling or excavation.

Lastly, there were BUNDLE, BOULEVARD, LOAFER and ROLLS-ROYCE. They all start with the names of baked goods: “bun” (bun), “boule” (ball bread), “loaf” (loaf bread), “roll” (roll).

How-To Guide: How to Play New York Times Connections

There is a complete guide on how to play Connections, but here is a summary of the rules: first, access the Connections game on the New York Times website or in the Games app (formerly Crossword). A board with 16 tiles, each containing a word or phrase, will be displayed. The objective is to select a group of four pieces that share something in common. They are often all of the same type (e.g. RAIN, HAIL, FROST, and SNOW are all types of wet weather phenomena), but sometimes they involve wordplay (e.g., BUCKET, GUEST, TOP TEN, and WISH are all types of lists: wish list, guest list, etc.).

Select four items and click the “Submit” button. If the guess is correct, the category and color will be revealed (yellow is the easiest, followed by green, then blue, and lastly purple). If the guess is incorrect, there will be another chance to try.

Victory is achieved by correctly identifying all four groups. However, if the player makes four mistakes before finishing, the game ends and the answers are revealed.

Effective Strategies for Winning at Connections

The most important aspect of being successful at Connections is knowing that groupings are designed to deceive. It is common to find groups that overlap. For example, a previous puzzle seemed to include six breakfast foods: BACON, EGG, PANCAKE, OMELET, WAFFLE, and CEREAL. However, BACON was part of a group of painters, along with CLOSE, MUNCH and WHISTLER, and EGG was in a group of things that come in dozens (with JURADO, ROSE and MONTH). Therefore, do not click “Submit” until you confirm that your group of four contains only those four items.

If the player is stuck, another strategy is to observe words that seem to have no connection with the others. If, when you see WHISTLER, the only thing that comes to mind is the painting known as “Whistler’s Mother,” there may be a clue there. In solving this puzzle, a Google search to see if there was a painter named Close was helpful, as Close didn’t fit into any of the obvious themes.

An additional way to win when you’re stuck is, of course, to read some helpful tips, which is why we share these guidelines every day. Come back tomorrow for the next challenge!
