João Fonseca is preparing to face Norwegian Casper Ruud in the third round of the Masters 1000 in Montreal on August 7, 2026. The match, which will be the third on Center Court, is scheduled to start after 8pm, Brasília time.

After a period without competing on the ATP circuit since July 3, Fonseca returned directly in the second phase of the Masters 1000 in Montreal, entering as the 22nd seed. The tennis player, currently in 27th place in the rankings, secured his place by overcoming the Greek Stefano Tsitsipas, who occupies 53rd position and was already top 3, in two sets with partials of 7/6 (3) and 7/5, after a match lasting 1 hour and 50 minutes.

Previously, Ruud had been defeated by Argentine Juan Manuel Cerundolo, 52nd in the rankings, in the quarterfinals of the ATP 250 in Gstaad, Switzerland. However, the Norwegian eliminated the same Cerundolo in less than an hour to advance and face Fonseca. The 27-year-old player, holder of 14 career titles, has recorded 25 wins and 14 losses in the current season.
This will be the second clash between the two athletes on the professional circuit. The only time they faced each other was in May 2026, when Fonseca surprised by beating Ruud by 3 sets to 1 in the round of 16 at Roland Garros, in a battle lasting almost four hours. This result demonstrates the young Brazilian’s ability to compete at a high level against experienced opponents, and the reunion in Montreal will define who advances to the round of 16 of the tournament.
