On August 13, the world community celebrates International Left-Handed Day, a date dedicated to all people who predominantly use their left hand. This annual celebration seeks not only to honor the unique characteristics of left-handed people, but also to highlight the difficulties that can arise in everyday life, in an environment predominantly designed for right-handed people.

To celebrate International Left-Handed Day, many left-handed individuals suggest that right-handed people try performing routine activities with their left hand. This simple practice helps right-handed people better understand daily obstacles and the resilience demonstrated by those who live in a world adapted to the other hand.

Unexpected advantages of being left-handed

Research indicates that driving with your left hand may offer certain advantages. A survey carried out by the AA driving school revealed that left-handed drivers are 10% more likely to pass the driving test.

The study found that approximately 57% of left-handers manage to pass the test on the first attempt. This data contrasts with the general average, suggesting a possible adaptive ability or specific coordination.

Research by the United States National Bureau of Economic Research showed that left-handed men with a college education can have incomes up to 15% higher than their right-handed counterparts with the same educational level.

There is also a perception that left-handed people tend to develop better problem-solving skills. This ability may be linked to the need for constant adaptation in a world with tools and systems designed for right-handed people.

The presence of left-handed people in leadership positions is notable, with four of the last six United States presidents being left-handed. Furthermore, they make up a significant portion of Nobel Prize laureates and represent 20% of the members of Mensa, an association of people with high IQ.

Left-handed people face a higher risk of daily accidents

Despite the advantages, a study published in the journal Pediatrics, involving more than 550 children, revealed that left-handed children were almost twice as likely to suffer injuries and need medical attention compared to right-handed children.

Studies conducted by Harvard University suggest that this difference in accident rates can be explained by the way left-handers have to constantly adjust to an environment shaped for right-handers, which can increase exposure to risky situations.

Percentage of left-handed people in the world population

Currently, around 10% of the world’s population is left-handed. This proportion has remained relatively stable over time, generating curiosity about the factors that determine hand preference.

Factors contributing to left-hand preference

Researchers are still seeking to fully understand the reasons why only a tenth of the global population is left-handed, although there are several theories to explain this phenomenon.

There is evidence that genes can influence a child’s predilection for the right hand, but a specific gene, passed from parent to child, may favor a preference for the left hand.

Statistically, boys are more likely to be left-handed than girls. Some researchers suggest that male testosterone may play a role in determining one-handed dominance.

Other theories indicate that learning and imitation by parents and caregivers may influence the choice of dominant hand in childhood, although the genetic basis is widely accepted.

Cognitive abilities and musical talent of left-handers

Research indicates that left-handed people are more likely to have an IQ above 131 compared to right-handed individuals. This correlation suggests possible differences in brain organization or cognitive processing.

In the world of music, although there is a subjective debate about the superiority of left-handed musicians, reports indicate that left-handed and ambidextrous people tend to show greater interest in less conventional or more obscure musical genres.
