Xbox chief technology officer Scott Van Vliet has released new information about the recent flaw that prevented many players from accessing their content. The executive’s transparency, already praised after the initial interruption that affected both disc and digital games, provided important details about the causes and solutions implemented.
On July 28, Van Vliet had confirmed that a “licensing service external to Xbox” was responsible for the server outage, which lasted around 20 hours. At the time, he highlighted that Xbox engineering teams were conducting a “thorough post-incident analysis” to understand why a failure in a single service generated so much instability.
Subsequently, the Xbox technology director returned to digital platforms to share the team’s conclusions, detailing the main cause of the problem, Microsoft’s actions to remedy the situation and the next steps.
An interruption in a vital service for console sharing and access to content purchased via Game Pass, in addition to affecting some scenarios on PCs, was triggered by a system update that left several features inoperative. This issue was compounded by a bug in the Xbox client software, which in turn caused other license checks to fail when the primary service was disabled. The combination of these two factors resulted in a series of glitches that compromised players’ ability to launch their games and created complications when displaying libraries.
Van Vliet also clarified the measures taken to resolve the incident, including transferring the management of the external services involved to the Xbox team itself, prior to correcting an error in the client that began to be distributed.
The executive stated that “ownership of the underlying licensing service is being transferred to the Xbox team, while our engineers actively work to strengthen the services and infrastructure for future updates.” He added that the “client bug has been fixed in a future release, which begins shipping today, August 10th, and becomes mandatory on August 17th.”
The expectation is that these measures will prevent the occurrence of future interruptions of this magnitude. The open and transparent stance of Scott Van Vliet, who was appointed to the position at the beginning of the year by CEO Asha Sharma, has been widely praised and seen as a differentiator in the company’s communication with the community.
Van Vliet concluded his communication by stating that the “engineering and operations teams are extensively analyzing our infrastructure to improve the reliability of our products and services,” and mentioned that “some exciting new features” and user experience enhancements will be made available on Xbox consoles in the coming weeks and months.
