Sony still does not have an internal forecast for the launch of the PlayStation 6, even after publicly addressing the issue. The uncertainty is mainly due to the rising costs of crucial components such as RAM and storage, a direct consequence of the growing demand for artificial intelligence tools. The information was revealed by the company’s CEO, Hiroki Totoki, in an interview with the Wall Street Journal.

Essential components under pressure from artificial intelligence

The semiconductor segment has faced a significant increase in prices, driven by the accelerated advancement and adoption of artificial intelligence in several industries. High-performance graphics processors and memory modules, essential for the development of AI systems, are becoming increasingly expensive and scarce on the global market. This pressure makes long-term planning difficult for consumer electronics manufacturers around the world.

The intense demand for chips and RAM, necessary to train and run complex artificial intelligence models, has created a scenario of fierce competition between different sectors. Technology companies that invest heavily in AI are prioritizing the acquisition of these components, increasing production costs for other products that depend on the same raw materials. The direct impact is felt throughout the global supply chain, generating impacts on several industries.

Widespread impacts on the console and technology sector

The crisis in component prices is not just restricted to Sony and the development of the PlayStation 6. Other major console manufacturers, such as Nintendo and Xbox, have already been forced to readjust their consumer sales prices. This scenario points to a tendency for technology in general to become more expensive, directly affecting users’ pockets and the strategies of large companies in the sector.

Technology market analysts predict a complete depletion of RAM memory supply by 2027, if the demand for artificial intelligence continues at this intense pace. This alarming prognosis raises concerns about the industry’s ability to maintain the pace of innovation and production of new products. The availability and cost of basic components become critical bottlenecks for the launch of any new electronic device.

Possible paths for the launch of the PlayStation 6

Given the current scenario, Sony is faced with two main paths for the eventual arrival of the PlayStation 6 on the market. One of the options would be to launch the console at a significantly high price, above the standards expected by consumers. This would reflect the inflated production costs of the components, shifting part of the burden to the end consumer, which could impact initial sales.

The alternative is to wait for the supply of components to normalize and prices to stabilize, which would imply postponing the launch for an indefinite period. This strategy aims to make the console more accessible, but runs the risk of frustrating the expectations of consumers eager for new things. Both decisions have direct implications for the brand’s competitiveness in the global market and the user experience.

Lessons from past generations and the future of electronics

The current situation refers to challenges faced in previous generations of consoles, such as the production difficulties of the PlayStation 5 during the Covid-19 pandemic. At that time, the shortage of chips and problems in the supply chain also caused delays and made it difficult for consumers in several regions of the world to acquire the device. The difference now is the nature of the demand, driven by a new emerging technology: artificial intelligence.

The growing influence of artificial intelligence on hardware costs suggests a future where the affordability of new electronics could be seriously compromised for the average consumer. Consumers can expect more expensive products or more widely spaced launches as the industry struggles to balance demand for AI with the production of devices for the mass consumer market. This is a complex challenge that redefines technology priorities.

  • Main challenges for the next generation of consoles:
  • * Increase in production costs.

    * Shortage of vital components.

    * Direct impact of demand for artificial intelligence.

    * Dilemma between high price and postponement of launch.

In the long term, the industry may have to seek new approaches to manufacturing and product design, adopting more sustainable and efficient methods. Innovative supply chain solutions and the development of more efficient, lower-cost components will be crucial to ensuring the technology continues to be affordable. The current panorama requires a strategic reassessment of research and development priorities by large technology companies.
