Insomniac Games’ new title, *Marvel’s Wolverine*, will have its performance mode as standard on the original PlayStation 5, delivering 60 frames per second (FPS) with ray tracing technology. The information was revealed by the developer itself on August 23, 2026, highlighting a significant change in the approach to graphics settings for its games. “This is the first time that this option is selected by default in one of our games,” said Insomniac Games during an interview with IGN France.

Visual quality and fluidity for players

The decision to prioritize performance mode represents excellent news for players. They will be able to experience Logan’s adventures with total fluidity, enjoying the advanced reflections provided by ray tracing, a feature previously more associated with graphical fidelity modes. Although details such as Performance mode resolution (probably 4K with upscaling) or specific gains on PlayStation 5 Pro have not yet been released, the guarantee of a smooth and graphically rich experience from the start is a plus.

History of graphics modes in Insomniac titles

The default choice for *Marvel’s Wolverine* marks an evolution in the graphical options of Insomniac games, especially when compared to previous releases:

  • 2020:*Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales* and *Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered* received a “Performance + Ray Tracing” mode about a month after release, requiring a later update.
  • 2023:*Marvel’s Spider-Man 2* was launched with 60 FPS and ray tracing available on all graphics settings. However, the game started by default in Fidelity mode, which offered 30 frames per second.

The immediate “new generation” experience

This default configuration is a detail that makes a big difference in the player’s initial perception. When starting *Marvel’s Wolverine* in September and already encountering 60 FPS and ray tracing, the public will have the immediate feeling of playing a title that takes full advantage of the power of the PS5. It’s a clear demonstration that the current generation of consoles still has a lot to offer in terms of performance and visual quality.

PS5 with advanced graphics postpones the urgency of PS6

The PlayStation 5’s ability to play games at 4K, 60 frames per second and with ray tracing raises questions about the immediate need for a successor. Traditionally, the next PlayStation, the PS6, would be expected around 2027, following the usual console release cycle. However, recent information points to a possible postponement, with the console hitting the market in 2028 or even 2029, which reinforces the longevity and graphical capacity of the PS5.
