A promising new title is on its way to the gaming world: “Crimson Moon”. The RPG, developed by ProbablyMonsters, promises an intriguing fusion of action RPG elements with the challenging dynamics of roguelikes. The official launch is scheduled for September 1, 2026, with availability for PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S, bringing a proposal that seeks to captivate fans of both genres with its setting and mechanics.

The highly anticipated game places players in a Gothic Renaissance universe, immersing them in a plot where gameplay is the main focus. Although it presents an immersive experience, some disadvantages have already been highlighted, such as frame rate drops and camera problems at certain times, issues that developers can improve until launch.

Getting to know the narrative and dark universe of Crimson Moon

The story of “Crimson Moon” puts players in the shoes of a lone Nephilim, a creature with half-human, half-angelic heritage. This protagonist belongs to the Order of the Crimson Moon, an organization under the authority of the Lunitarian Church, with the singular mission of protecting humanity from evil forces and its various enemies. The journey begins with a crucial mission: the retaking of the devastated city of Gildenarch.

The heroes are sent to explore the districts of the fallen city in search of three ancient artifacts, known as the Stones of Abraxas. These mystical items, according to the game’s mythology, guard the souls of dead gods, and their recovery is essential to completely banish these deities. The narrative develops in a similar way to Souls-like and roguelike games, with the plot serving as a backdrop for the intense action and discovery.

Delving deeper into plot details and interactions

The narrative construction is presented in a more subtle way, requiring players to fill in some gaps through exploration and their own imagination. Basic information about the origin of the Nephilim, humanity’s adversaries, and the nature of angels is provided. However, crucial aspects, such as the real purposes of the church or the genesis of the fallen gods, are progressively revealed in the second half of the adventure, creating an ongoing sense of mystery.

Players will also encounter a variety of non-playable characters (NPCs) scattered throughout the city, each with their own stories and details to share. Although many of these characters display strong personalities, the missions and plot lines associated with them tend to be straightforward and sometimes lack greater depth, which can decrease engagement compared to other RPGs.

Fighting and evolving in Crimson Moon

“Crimson Moon’s” combat system is where the game really shines, uniquely combining roguelike and action RPG elements. Players begin each match with basic attributes and equipment for their Nefilim. As they progress, they face different enemies and discover a wide range of weaponry, armor pieces and accessories. Each type of weapon offers distinct advantages and disadvantages, providing a feeling of use that is significantly different from each other.

Players can unlock multiple abilities, which are determined by the type and rarity of the weapon found, after defeating enemies and opening chests. Each ability is visually striking and functional, ranging from throwing swords that return to the wielder, dealing double damage, to markings that intensify the opponent’s damage. Additionally, there are skills that employ elemental projectiles and a series of negative effects, such as freezing, bleeding and poisoning.

System of equipment and items that transform the experience

Along the journey, players will find various equipment that not only increases their overall attributes, but also grants conditional abilities. These bonuses include:

  • Increased attributes during dash attacks.
  • Additional elemental damage when performing perfect dodges.
  • Specific improvements to heavy attacks.
  • Varied bonuses when exploring the environment.

The practice of optimizing equipment after each victory is an addictive aspect of the game, rewarding players who seek constant progression with an impressive array of items. Unlike other titles in the genre, most of the equipment and items collected in “Crimson Moon” really matter, and the differences between them, even if they seem small at first glance, are crucial to the success of the journey. Accumulating fury during combat, through attacks and enemy eliminations, allows players to activate their ultimate attack, transforming the Nephilim into an angelic form capable of causing devastating damage.

Persistent progression and technical challenges

“Crimson Moon” offers the ability to obtain permanent upgrades and equipment between matches, allowing players to level up naturally by accumulating experience points. Death in the game rarely feels unfair or overly punishing, especially since there are multiple opportunities to revive before a definitive defeat. Frustration with death usually only arises when players are close to completing a match.

Once players reach the end of a game, it often indicates that they have developed the skills necessary to return and advance further in future playthroughs. Progression is seen as a result of the player’s dexterity rather than luck. Playing and progressing individually is completely viable, but the game was designed to be played by two players, promising a more fun experience with a friend.

Gothic aesthetics and immersive visuals

Despite including great features, “Crimson Moon” also faces some technical challenges that can compromise the experience. Moments and areas have been reported where the frame rate drops drastically, making certain sections almost unplayable, even at minimum graphics settings on PC. Additionally, the camera system can make combat against multiple enemies and bosses difficult, oscillating and rotating uncontrollably even when locked on to a target.

The visuals of “Crimson Moon” are, however, one of its strong points. The game features high-quality lighting and stunning visual effects. The enemy and character designs are detailed and intricate, and the overall art direction is stellar. The Gothic Renaissance aesthetic is showcased effectively, contributing to a unique and immersive atmosphere that fans of roguelikes and action RPGs will certainly appreciate, despite the technical challenges.
