Anthropic has introduced a significant update to its Claude artificial intelligence model. On September 1, 2026, the company released Fable 5.1, three months after the initial presentation of Fable 5, its previous Mythos-class AI version. This new iteration aims to enhance the system’s existing capabilities.
Arrival of the new Claude Fable 5.1 and Mythos 5.1 models
Within the Anthropic ecosystem, the Fable is recognized as Claude’s most powerful model. It positions itself above other versions such as Haiku, Sonnet and Opus, which are classified as smaller, medium and large models respectively, offering different levels of complexity and functionality.
Anthropic stated that Claude Fable 5.1 sets a new standard for programming activities, work that requires in-depth knowledge and long-running problem solving. The company highlights that the updated model presents a higher level of performance compared to its predecessor, the Fable 5.
Another point emphasized by the developer is that Fable 5.1 can deliver similar or even better results than Fable 5, but at a considerably reduced cost, especially when operating at low or medium effort levels. This represents potential savings for technology users and companies.
Anthropic detailed that Fable 5.1 was designed to avoid shortcuts that compromise the quality of work, being able to identify and correct the root causes of software problems. One notable example, reported by investment firm Millennium, is that the model was able to locate the source of a rare flaw in its internal systems, something that the firm’s own engineers and other AI models had not resolved for years, demonstrating high-level problem-solving capabilities.
In addition to Fable 5.1, Anthropic will also make Mythos 5.1 available, specifically aimed at users who already have access to the Mythos line of models.
The company clarified that the Claude Fable 5.1 and the Claude Mythos 5.1 are essentially the same model, distinguished by the different levels of security incorporated. While Fable 5.1 is available to the general public, Mythos 5.1 is accessible only through trusted access programs, with safeguards designed for applications in cybersecurity and life sciences.
Cost analysis for Fable 5.1
Regarding cost, Fable 5.1 will see an estimated 25% reduction compared to Fable 5 for typical workloads, especially where billing is per token. This decrease is due to the price reduction for cache reads, when the model reuses already processed data. For jobs that require high agency, the savings can be even more significant, reaching around 45%.
Anthropic specified that the decrease in values applies to Fable 5.1 cache reads, in cases where usage is charged per token, as in its API. The company assures that this measure will result in a substantial reduction in the total operating cost of the model, while other aspects of pricing remain unchanged in relation to Fable 5.
