Many consumers question whether frequent use of fast chargers can harm the battery of electric vehicles. To clarify this doubt, BYD revealed, on September 1, 2026, the results of an intensive evaluation with its Yangwang U7 model. The sedan traveled 30,000 kilometers in nine days in the city of Nanning, China, receiving 350 ultra-fast recharges to simulate wear and tear in real conditions.
The main objective of the experiment was to verify the effective wear of the battery by exposing it to high-speed tracks and temperatures of 36 °C, as well as continuous charging sessions with high voltage. During the process, the vehicle reached up to 240 km/h and was supplied with peaks of 640 kW of energy through Flash Charging technology.
This charging technology allows the battery level to rise from 10% to 97% in approximately nine minutes. After a series of rigorous tests, the manufacturer’s data revealed that the battery pack preserved 98.7% of its initial capacity, recording a minimum loss of just 1.3%.
BYD Battery Technology Demonstrates Resilience in Extreme Conditions
The reduced rate of degradation observed points to a significant advancement in thermal management systems, which were effective in controlling the temperature increase caused by high voltage. Efficient heat management is essential as it prevents permanent damage to power cells, even in intense and uninterrupted charging cycles.
It is important to consider that lithium-ion batteries typically show a more pronounced degradation in their first stages of use, before the capacity loss curve stabilizes. Therefore, a minimum loss of 1.3% after 30 thousand kilometers can be interpreted as a very encouraging result.
However, it is important to highlight that the practical results obtained do not replicate the degradation that occurs over time, influenced by factors such as years of use, different climatic conditions and periods of inactivity. Although the data comes from BYD’s internal assessments and not from a neutral entity, the demonstration suggests that ultra-fast recharges may affect battery life less aggressively than previously thought.
Even with advances, it is undeniable that, over time, any electric vehicle battery will show a considerable loss of its original capacity.
