Rockstar Games has confirmed that the character switching mechanics in Grand Theft Auto 6 (GTA 6) will have restrictions at specific moments in the plot. The information was revealed by Rockstar North co-director Rob Nelson in an interview with Famitsu magazine. The protagonists Jason and Lucia will not be able to be switched freely during certain missions in the game.
Unlike its predecessor GTA 5, which allowed switching between characters more flexibly, the new title will limit this functionality to enhance the narrative. This approach aims to immerse the player in the individual perspective of each protagonist, depending on the mission and their development in the main story.
Nelson explained that “during the story, there are times when you can’t switch characters for some reason.” He added that while there are free-switching missions, there are sections intentionally designed for the player to “experience the story from a certain character’s perspective, like in GTA 5, so we limit switching.”
The Rockstar director exemplified this dynamic by citing an initial mission, in which Jason takes the lead due to his military experience. At another point, during the escape from the bank robbery that appears in the extended Netflix trailer, the alternation between Jason (shooting in the back seat) and Lucia (driving) occurs automatically, without intervention from the player.
However, Nelson also assured that the trailer’s final mission, when the couple is attacked, will allow for free exchange. Outside of story mode missions, switching between Jason and Lucia will be possible at any time in the open world, a feature already presented in previous previews of the game.

Grand Theft Auto 6, which is being developed by Rockstar Games, marks the return of the acclaimed franchise after thirteen years. Since the smash launch of GTA 5 in 2013, this is the first new title, reinforcing the series’ position as one of the most successful in the world of video games.
The game’s setting will transport players to a vast open world inspired by Florida, in the United States. The setting will take place in Vice City, a fictional version of Miami that had already been introduced in the first Grand Theft Auto and later gained an exclusive game, the classic GTA Vice City, released in 2002.
The plot of GTA 6 will feature two main protagonists, Lucia and Jason. Described as a couple with a criminal history, they embark on a journey reminiscent of the iconic duo Bonnie and Clyde, immersing players in their adventures through the criminal underworld of Vice City.
The release of Grand Theft Auto 6 is scheduled for November 19, 2026, with availability for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. So far, Rockstar Games has not made any announcements about a possible version for computers (PC).
