A new historical folk-horror title, “Hunter’s Moon,” will arrive exclusively on PlayStation 5 on October 26, which coincides with the night of the Hunter’s Moon. The game, described as an immersive first-person narrative, promises to transport players to a dark period in English history, immersing them in a witch hunt scenario with an approach that focuses on human terror.

The perilous journey of an accused witch

In “Hunter’s Moon,” players take on the role of Lilith Thorne, a woman accused of witchcraft who must flee for her life. The plot unfolds over a single, fateful night, set in a 17th-century rural village and its surroundings, which include dense forests and moorland. In this hostile environment, Lilith is relentlessly pursued by the Witch Hunter General, the local magistrate, and a local hunter.

To evade capture, players must employ stealth and cunning. The village is full of quirky characters, including “mummers” in folk costumes and villagers worn down by war and misfortune, whose conversations can reveal crucial secrets. Lilith’s survival depends on her ability to unravel the mysteries of this dysfunctional village on the verge of collapse.

Immersion mechanics and the discovery of secrets

The game features an innovative “listening” mechanic, inspired by immersive theater, which invites the player to explore the village and discover its stories. By approaching windows and doors, Lilith can hear conversations, gaining knowledge and assistance that could be vital to her journey. This may include words of warning, wise advice, sacred items, or even folk songs.

The narrative is enriched by the voices of more than 100 characters, all with full voice acting, contributing to the dense and historically accurate atmosphere. The game’s development combines historical realism with stylized, handcrafted art, creating a unique visual and audio experience.

The Horrors of the Witch Hunt and Matthew Hopkins

The backdrop of “Hunter’s Moon” is the height of witch hunt fever in 17th century England, a period marked by paranoia and persecution. A central character in this historical context is Matthew Hopkins, who between 1644 and 1647 led a cruel witch-hunting crusade. Calling himself the “Witch Hunter General”, he became notorious for his controversial methods of identifying witches.

In 1647, Hopkins published the book “The Discovery of Witches”, justifying their practices. He and his colleague, John Stearne, were responsible for sending more people to the gallows on accusations of witchcraft than all other previous English witch hunters combined. The game seeks to recreate the atmosphere of fear and brutality that unfolded under such circumstances.

Twin Swans and the vision of horror beyond the supernatural

The idea for “Hunter’s Moon” was born in 2019, when Alicia Contestabile, screenwriter and director, began writing a script inspired by Matthew Hopkins’ story. This vision culminated in the founding of the independent studio Twin Swans, which brings together artists and developers with experience in titles such as “The Stanley Parable: Ultra Deluxe”, “The Dark Pictures Anthology: Little Hope”, “The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt” and “Signalis”.

A shared passion for history and artisanal creation guided the studio in the conception of “Hunter’s Moon”. The game proposes a deep reflection on what really scares: “What if the most terrifying thing in our world is not monsters or magic, but other people?” This approach sets it apart from many media depictions of witches that often rely on supernatural elements, such as witches flying on broomsticks or ghosts haunting communities. The experience seeks to explore human fears and beliefs as the true sources of horror.

The persistence of witchcraft accusations in contemporary times

Although “Hunter’s Moon” is set in a specific historical period, the concept of the “witch” is universal, existing independently in almost every culture. Historically, this figure, usually a woman on the margins of society, has been accused, persecuted, and executed based on magical beliefs.

The game highlights an unsettling truth: despite modern understanding of the historical and social factors behind witch hunts, the practice continues in some parts of the world, even today. In this way, “Hunter’s Moon” invites players to ponder the nature of human cruelty and the way in which societies deal with the different and the unknown, inviting a reflection that transcends the period portrayed in the game.
