A fleet of 2,977 illuminated drones operated by Sky Elements took flight over New York Harbor on September 9, 2026, recreating the silhouette of the World Trade Center Twin Towers in tribute to the victims of the September 11 attacks. Each individual light in the sky represented one person who perished during the tragedy.

Addison Mehr designed the production under the official title 2,977 Lights Over New York Harbor in collaboration with drone company Sky Elements. The New York Foundation for the Arts provided institutional backing for the memorial event. Organizers staged the performance to observe the 25th anniversary of the strikes ahead of September 11, 2026.

The airborne machines moved in unison across the waterfront, forming a massive luminous constellation above the bay. This geometric display traced the exact architectural profiles of the two skyscrapers that defined the Manhattan skyline before their collapse in 2001.

Timeline of the coordinated strikes across American targets

The extremist organization al-Qaeda planned and executed the offensive against four designated locations on American soil. The synchronized strikes targeted key centers across the country. Terrorists directed commercial aircraft toward these national sites.

The first hijacked jetliner struck the North Tower of the World Trade Center at 8:46 a.m. A second commercial plane impacted the South Tower shortly after at 9:03 a.m.

A third passenger jet crashed directly into the Pentagon complex. The facility serves as the headquarters for the United States Department of Defense. The strike inflicted heavy structural damage on the military building.

Passengers fought back. The fourth hijacked plane subsequently went down in an open field near Shanksville in Pennsylvania before reaching the intended target of the extremists.

The death toll of 2,977 individuals matched the precise count of aerial devices launched above New York.
