Julien’s Auctions announced the sale of the skateboard used by Tony Hawk in the “900” maneuver in 1999 for $1.15 million, equivalent to R$6.12 million, at an event held on Tuesday (23) at the Loews Hollywood Hotel in Los Angeles and online. The amount more than doubled the initial estimate, setting a new record for skate-related items. The proceeds will support The Skatepark Project, Hawk’s nonprofit organization dedicated to building public skateparks in underserved communities.

Legendary maneuver drives auction value

The skateboard, central to the two-and-a-half aerial spin performed by Hawk at the 1999 X Games in San Francisco, made sports history.

The item, symbolizing one of the most iconic moments in global skateboarding, attracted collectors and fans, pushing its price far beyond expectations.

Hawk, present at the event, emphasized the importance of directing the funds to social initiatives, highlighting the auction’s impact beyond its financial success.

Other standout items in the sale

In addition to the skateboard, other gear used by Hawk in the “900” maneuver drew significant bids. The list includes:

  • A pair of black and orange Adio sneakers, sold for $64,000 (R$340,000).
  • The helmet used in the maneuver, acquired for $115,200 (R$613,800).
  • Knee pads, purchased for $57,600 (R$306,900).

These amounts also exceeded initial projections, reflecting growing interest in items tied to the athlete’s legacy.

Julien’s Auctions, known for auctioning pop culture memorabilia, described the event as a milestone for sports collectibles.

Rare items from Hawk’s career

The auction, named “Tony Hawk: The 900 Collection,” featured other notable items from the skater’s career. A 1982 Powell-Peralta skateboard, the first professional model signed by Hawk, sold for $57,600 (R$306,900).

A Simpsons winter jacket, received after his appearance on the show in 2003, fetched $6,400 (R$34,100).

The bronze medal from the 1999 X Games vertical final was acquired for $8,960 (R$47,740), cementing the event as a celebration of Hawk’s legacy.

Cultural and social impact of the event

The record-breaking sale underscores Tony Hawk’s enduring relevance in sports and pop culture. At 57, the athlete continues to influence generations of skaters and collectors.

The funds raised will bolster The Skatepark Project, which has built over 600 skateparks in low-income areas across the United States.

The event also highlights the growing value of skateboarding as a collectible, comparable to items from celebrities like Michael Jackson and Lady Di, previously auctioned by Julien’s.
