A 50-year-old woman, identified as Helizabete Pinheiro, died after suffering a sudden illness during a dance class at a gym in the Ingleses neighborhood, northern Florianópolis, on Tuesday night (21). The incident occurred around 7:50 p.m., when the student became unconscious and went into cardiorespiratory arrest. Despite efforts by a doctor present at the scene and emergency teams, she did not survive. The cause of the sudden illness is still under investigation.

Firefighters were promptly called and began resuscitation procedures. The case stirred the local community, with friends posting tributes on social media. The gym issued a statement of condolence, reinforcing support for the family.

  • Emergency teams attempted resuscitation for over 40 minutes.
  • A doctor among the students assisted before firefighters arrived.
  • The gym is cooperating with authorities to clarify the case.

Emergency response at the scene

The Santa Catarina Military Fire Department (CBMSC) arrived quickly at the gym. Rescuers used an automated external defibrillator, supplemental oxygen, and cardiac massage. The Samu advanced support team took over, but efforts were insufficient to save Helizabete.

Initial rescue efforts

A doctor among the gym’s students began initial resuscitation efforts. He applied techniques before the firefighters’ arrival. The gym praised the doctor’s swift action. The joint work between the doctor and rescuers followed strict protocols. Despite attempts, the victim showed no signs of recovery during treatment.

Community reaction

Friends and family expressed grief on social media. Helizabete, known as “Betinha,” was remembered for her joy and dedication. Posts highlighted her friendship and positive energy, with farewell messages. The gym reiterated its commitment to supporting the student’s family.

Gym’s statement

The gym’s management issued an official note mourning the incident. The statement confirmed the team provided immediate support and remains available to authorities. “Our solidarity to Helizabete’s family and friends, an irreparable loss,” the note stated.

Ongoing investigation

Authorities are still investigating the exact cause of Helizabete’s sudden illness. No information on pre-existing medical conditions is available.

Prevention in gyms

Cases of sudden illness in gyms underscore the importance of preventive measures. Experts recommend regular medical check-ups for those engaging in physical activities.

  • Cardiological evaluation before starting intense workouts.
  • Presence of defibrillators in gyms, as required by law in some states.
  • Staff training for medical emergencies. The quick response in Helizabete’s case highlights the importance of these measures.
