Partnership between Sony and Honda reveals electric car with full PlayStation integration and autonomous driving
The Sony Honda Mobility joint venture advances in the development of its first electric vehicle, the Afeela, with a proposal that aims to redefine the mobility experience through digital technology. The project stands out on the global automotive scene not only for its minimalist design, but for the profound incorporation of entertainment systems that transform the cabin into an immersive leisure space. The initiative seeks to take advantage of travel time, which is often idle, by converting the vehicle’s interior into an extension of passengers’ digital lifestyle.
The model uses the Unreal Engine 5 platform, developed by Epic Games, to create complex and responsive visual interfaces that occupy the entire front panel of the car. Essa graphics technology, commonly associated with high-fidelity gaming, allows the infotainment system to provide navigation data and vehicle conditions with an unprecedented level of visual detail. The collaboration between the Japanese giants aims to set a new standard where software and user interaction are as crucial as driving mechanics.
Convergence between games and mobility
One of the most anticipated differentiators of the Afeela is the ability to run home console games directly on the vehicle’s dashboard. The system is designed to support remote use of PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, allowing occupants to continue their gaming sessions while on the road or during charging stops. The integration includes support for the DualSense controller, ensuring haptic feedback and gameplay maintain the fidelity found in living rooms.
The sound experience also receives special attention with the implementation of Sony’s 360 Reality Audio technology. The system strategically distributes speakers throughout the cabin, including in the headrests, to create an immersive and personalized sound field for each occupant. Além of entertainment, the audio system works in conjunction with the simulation of engine noises, offering enthusiasts the option of listening to the sound of classic vehicles, such as the Honda RA272 of Fórmula 1, synchronized with the acceleration of the electric car.
Sensors and processing capacity
Safety and autonomous driving are underpinned by the Snapdragon digital chassis, a high-performance processor capable of 800 trillion operations per second. Este computing power is required to manage data collected by more than 40 sensors spread throughout the vehicle, including cameras, radars and LiDAR. The technological suite allows the car to monitor the environment in 360 degrees, identifying pedestrians, obstacles and other vehicles with precision, aiming to achieve level 3 autonomy in specific traffic conditions.
The exterior design reflects the connected nature of the car through “Media Bar”, a screen installed between the front headlights. Este feature allows the vehicle to communicate visually with people outside the car, displaying information about charging status, weather warnings or personalized messages. Production of the Afeela will be carried out at the Honda factory in
