K-pop sensation Riize etched their name in history as the first K-pop act to perform at Lollapalooza Brazil this past Saturday. Their groundbreaking appearance marked a significant moment for the global music scene and for Brazilian fans eagerly awaiting their arrival.
During their inaugural visit to the vibrant South American nation, the group shared insights into their experiences, expressing a deep appreciation for the country’s culture and its people. Beyond the main stage, the members embraced a whirlwind tour of São Paulo, creating lasting memories.
Their time in Brazil involved immersing themselves in local sights, sounds, and tastes, providing a unique glimpse into their personal connections with the country. From iconic street art to beloved culinary delights, Riize’s journey extended far beyond their electrifying performance.
Embracing São Paulo’s vibrant energy
Upon arrival, the members quickly embarked on an exploration of São Paulo’s unique urban landscape. One of their first stops was the famous Batman Alley, nestled in the Vila Madalena neighborhood, a vibrant outdoor art gallery renowned for its constantly evolving street art and murals.
The lively atmosphere of the city left a strong impression on the group. Member Sungchan remarked on the palpable energy: “We arrived in Brazil and immediately walked through a street full of murals, rode the Ferris wheel, and also watched Lollapalooza shows. Honestly, the vibe of the streets here is really good, people are very smiling, and I think all this energy is incredible, so we are very excited for today’s show.”
Anton’s musical ‘saudade’
Anton, a member of Riize, revealed a particularly deep connection with Brazilian culture, specifically its music. Even before setting foot in the country, he had “saudade” (a Portuguese word for a deep emotional state of nostalgic longing for something or someone that is absent) engraved on his microphone. His affinity for bossa nova, a cornerstone of Brazilian music, was evident when he performed a segment of “Águas de Março,” a classic by Antônio Carlos Jobim and Elis Regina, during the group’s special sideshow event on Thursday at Terra SP. “I’ve always loved Latin music, bossa nova is one of my favorite styles, so being in Brazil, I wanted to sing this song, because it’s March and it’s been raining a lot, and I simply love this song. Antônio Carlos Jobim and Elis Regina are incredible artists,” Anton shared, highlighting his admiration for the iconic Brazilian artists.
A continental festival journey
Riize’s Lollapalooza Brazil performance was the culmination of a broader Latin American festival tour. Before captivating audiences in São Paulo, the group had already made waves across the continent.
They brought their dynamic stage presence to Lollapalooza Argentina on March 14, followed by an equally energetic show at the Chilean edition of the festival on March 15. This string of performances solidified their growing international appeal and familiarized them with the enthusiastic Latin American crowd.
Culinary delights and future cravings
Beyond the music and sightseeing, Riize’s visit included sampling local delicacies. The traditional Brazilian cheese bread, “pão de queijo,” quickly became a favorite among the members. Anton, in particular, developed a strong liking for the savory treat.
“I want to eat more pão de queijo. It’s so delicious, and since it’s hard to find in Korea, I think I ended up eating it every day here,” Anton expressed, humorously noting his daily consumption of the snack during their stay. This culinary discovery added another layer to their memorable first trip to Brazil.
A special message for Brazilian fans
The group’s visit also saw them engaging directly with their passionate fanbase. One of the highlights included member Shotaro delivering a heartfelt message in Portuguese, directly addressing their Brazilian followers. His words resonated deeply with fans, strengthening the bond between the idols and their dedicated supporters.
During a candid moment, Shotaro exclaimed, “Tava com saudade, bebê, te amo!” (I missed you, baby, I love you!), a phrase that immediately spread across social media and endeared him further to the local audience. Such gestures underscore Riize’s commitment to connecting with their fans on a personal level.
K-pop’s growing footprint in Brazil
Riize’s landmark performance at Lollapalooza Brazil not only marked a personal milestone for the group but also underscored the accelerating expansion of K-pop’s influence across the globe. Their presence on such a prominent festival stage signifies a broader cultural shift, where Korean pop music continues to break down geographical and linguistic barriers.
The enthusiastic reception from Brazilian audiences, coupled with the group’s genuine appreciation for local culture, highlights a reciprocal exchange that enriches both the artists’ experiences and the cultural landscape of the host country. This successful debut paves the way for future K-pop acts to explore and embrace the vibrant Brazilian market.
Furthermore, the group’s visit to the Roda Rico, Latin America’s largest Ferris wheel located in Parque Cândido Portinari, where a special tribute to them was displayed, symbolized the grand scale of their welcome. These events collectively demonstrate the immense global reach and passionate following that K-pop commands, making Riize’s Brazilian journey a significant chapter in their burgeoning career.
