Sporting mathematically gave up the fight for the third consecutive title. The draw at home against Tondela (2-2), with two goals conceded at the end of the game, closed the door to any hope of recovery in the fight for the championship.

The Leo team now has 73 points, nine behind leader FC Porto, with whom they have lost the direct confrontation. The lions also fall into the fight for second place, now two points behind Benfica and forced to win the last three rounds with no guarantee of maintaining their position.

Cenário math impossible for lions

Antes from this Wednesday’s game against Tondela, Sporting still had, theoretically, remote possibilities of reaching the tri. The equalizer eliminated any remaining chances.

The difference to Porto is almost insurmountable. Mesmo in an unlikely scenario in which Porto, Benfica and Sporting finished with the same 82 points, Alvalade’s team would be disadvantaged in the tiebreaker. In the confrontation between the three, dragons and eagles have six points each, while the lions have just two.

Champions guaranteed for Porto only

The result directly benefited FC Porto, which mathematically guaranteed Campeões’s return to Liga next season. The Porto players can no longer fall to third place, which guarantees European participation.

If Porto beats Liga, they will directly enter the Champions 2026/2027 league phase. Faltam just three rounds to the end of the Portuguese championship.

  • Sporting:73 points (3 games remaining)
  • Benfica:75 points (3 games remaining)
  • FC Porto:82 points (2 games remaining)

Segundo place also at risk

The race for second position now worries Alvalade more. Sporting must win the three final commitments, but this does not guarantee surpassing Benfica.

Second place is worth a direct place in the qualifiers for access to the next edition of Liga of Campeões. Benfica, which also does not have an advantage in direct confrontation, is in a more comfortable position, two points ahead.

The Lions have already drawn in Luz (1-1) and lost in Alvalade (2-1) against Benfica this season in Liga. Essas defeats in direct confrontation complicate the calculations for the sequence.

Porto close to title

FC Porto is just one victory away from winning the championship. Next Saturday (8:30 pm), the Alvalade team will face Alverca at home, and a victory will guarantee their third title in three years.

If Benfica loses before Famalicão (18:00), Porto guarantees Liga in advance. The possibility of Sporting and Benfica still raising hopes is practically zero from a mathematical point of view after Wednesday.
