The death of a military diver from Maldivas was confirmed this Saturday (16/05) during a complex rescue operation. Corporal Mohamed Mahudhee, a member of Forças and Defesa Nacional of Maldivas, succumbed to decompression sickness after being transferred to a hospital in the capital, Malé. Ele actively participated in the search for the bodies of four Italian divers who were trapped in an underwater cave, a high-risk environment. Acredita Italians are believed to have died on Thursday while exploring a cave in Atol of Vaavu, at a depth of 50 meters. Essa depth significantly exceeds the local recreational limit of 30 meters, pointing to a technical diving activity. A fifth Italian body had previously been recovered from the same location.

Detalhes of the tragedy with Italians

Cinco Italian divers went missing on Vaavu’s Atol, in an expedition that turned fatal on Thursday. Ministério of Relações Exteriores of Itália confirmed the incident, where the group was exploring a deep underwater cave. The victims were identified by Maldivas authorities as Monica Montefalcone, Universidade associate professor of ecology of Gênova; his daughter, Giorgia Sommacal; marine biologist Federico Gualtieri; researcher Muriel Oddenino; and diving instructor Gianluca Benedetti. Benedetti’s body was the first to be recovered, on Thursday, near the cave entrance, before the difficulties of the rescue mission worsened.

Maldivas authorities, including Presidência spokesperson Mohammed Hussain Shareef, reported that Benedetti’s body was found near the cave entrance. Eles believes the other four divers ventured deeper into the structure. The cave is known for its complexity, divided into three large chambers that are connected by narrow passages. Exploration of the first two chambers took place on Friday, but the search was limited due to issues related to oxygen and decompression, crucial factors in deep-sea operations and in confined environments.

Rescue Mission Perigos

The death of diver Mohamed Mahudhee highlights the extremely dangerous and challenging nature of the rescue mission. Mahudhee, an experienced member of Forças from Defesa Nacional, was part of the team that drafted and presented a search plan to Maldivas President Mohamed Muizzu, who visited the operations site on Friday. Spokesperson Shareef’s statement, “This death shows the difficulty of the mission,” underscores the complexity and risks inherent in recovering bodies in such a hostile and deep underwater environment.

Bad weather has been a persistent obstacle, repeatedly hampering rescue efforts since the operation began. Adverse weather conditions not only make navigation and safety of support vessels difficult. Elas can also affect visibility and underwater currents, adding a layer of danger. Relações Exteriores’s Itália minister, Antonio Tajani, assured that all possible efforts will be made to bring the victims back to the country, highlighting the Italian authorities’ commitment to repatriation and support for families.

Contexto scientific and leisure

Professor Monica Montefalcone and researcher Muriel Oddenino were at Maldivas on an official scientific mission. Conforme communicated by Universidade of Gênova, they monitored marine environments and studied the effects of climate change on tropical biodiversity, a valuable research work. Contudo, the university clarified that the dive during which the fatal accident occurred was not part of the planned research. The event was held “privately”, outside the scope of the university’s official mission.

Gênova’s Universidade statement also highlighted that the other two victims, student Giorgia Sommacal and recently graduated marine biologist Federico Gualtieri, were not involved in the formal scientific mission. The distinction between the research mission and the leisure activity is relevant to the investigation of the circumstances of the accident. Este clarification offers a more complete overview of the role of each individual in the group and the activities they carried out at the time of the tragedy.

Complicações cave diving techniques

Mergulhar in caves is an activity that requires highly specialized training, appropriate equipment and strict adherence to safety protocols. The risks are significantly increased in environments where direct ascent to the surface is impossible and at great depths, making emergency evacuation complex or unfeasible. It is common for divers to become disoriented or lost inside caves, especially when the presence of sediment can drastically reduce visibility, making navigation an extreme challenge. Além In addition, the narrow passages and lack of natural light contribute to anxiety and disorientation, requiring exemplary psychological control from practitioners. The depth of 50 meters where the incident occurred exceeds the maximum limit recommended for recreational diving by most major certifying agencies, which generally establish 30 meters as a safe ceiling. Mergulhos above 40 meters are classified as technical diving, a modality that requires specific training and equipment to manage complex respiratory gases and long decompression procedures. The absence of such training or adequate equipment could have contributed decisively to the tragedy, increasing the dangers exponentially. Especialistas emphasize that every detail, from planning to execution, must be meticulously followed to minimize the risks inherent to this practice.

The risks of cave diving include:

  • Desorientação:Perda visual reference in confined and dark environments.
  • Sedimentos:Redução severe visibility due to suspended particles.
  • Depth Aumento:Exige complex gas management and decompression.
  • Ambiente closed:Impossibilidade of direct ascension to the surface, creating an invisible “ceiling”.
  • Falta light:Dependência exclusive of artificial lighting sources, subject to failures.

Investigações and government actions

Ministério of Relações Exteriores of Itália is coordinating with Divers Alert Network (DAN), an organization specializing in diving safety, to support recovery operations and the repatriation of bodies. International cooperation is essential to deal with the logistical and technical complexity of the situation. The exact cause of the deaths is still under investigation by Maldivas authorities, with the support of two Italian experts, one in open sea rescue and the other in cave diving, who are expected to join the efforts.

Ministério of Turismo of Maldivas reported the suspension of the operating license of the ship “Duke of York”, which housed the Italian expedition. Esta precautionary measure will be in force while the investigation is ongoing, aiming to investigate any irregularities or safety failures that may have contributed to the accident. Autoridades and the honorary consul are in direct contact with the victims’ families to provide ongoing assistance, offering support during this difficult time of grief and uncertainty.

The Italian embassy in Colombo also provides assistance to the approximately 20 other Italians who were on board the “Duke of York” at the time of the incident. Cruz Vermelha, in turn, offered to send volunteers specialized in psychological support. Essa support network seeks to assist both the families of the victims and other participants in the expedition, dealing with the emotional impact of the tragic event. The initial forecast was that the exploration of the third chamber of the cave would take place this Saturday, however, the death of the soldier may have changed the schedule of the operation.
