Snacks left in US cave create invasive food web in 2024

In September 2024, authorities at Parque Nacional of Cavernas of Carlsbad at Novo México discovered that tourists had left Cheetos snacks inside Big Room, the park’s vast underground cave system. The find triggered a cascade reaction in the cave’s fragile ecosystem. Guardas foresters spent 20 minutes meticulously removing mold and food debris from the rocky surface.

Eating food has been prohibited in the park’s caves since 1972. Somente drinking water is permitted. Apesar of warnings, food debris continues to be found in restricted areas, creating lasting biological impacts on underground microhabitats.

Reação in microbial chain caused by processed food

The Cheetos’s processed corn softened in the humidity of the cave, forming an ideal environment for the proliferation of microorganisms and fungi. Esse phenomenon is not isolated — the introduction of external nutrients activates biological processes that permanently alter the chemistry of the cave.

A temporary food web quickly emerged. Desert Grilos, mites, spiders and flies have colonized the area, feeding on the waste and spreading nutrients through the surrounding geological layers. The subsequent mold migrated to the upper surface layers, producing grains that died and gave off a foul odor. Esse cycle continued even after removal of visible debris.

The guards identified that many of the microorganisms and fungi did not previously exist in the cave’s ecosystem. The introduction of opportunistic species creates imbalances that persist beyond the initial cleanup. The park warned that these biological consequences could have been completely avoided.

Regulamentações and wildlife risks

Park rules prohibit consumption of food or drinks other than drinking water inside the caves. The official justification is twofold: to protect the underground ecosystem and avoid attracting wild animals to the depths. Resíduos food acts as bait for surface species, altering migratory and behavioral patterns.

Detritos left by individual tourists are difficult to erase completely, even with immediate intervention. Forest rangers carry out periodic searches, but the volume of visitors is high. Manually removing mold and fungi is laborious and cannot always restore the previous state.

Apelo from park authorities

Parque Nacional of Cavernas of Carlsbad published a statement on the official Facebook page on September 6, 2024, warning about the impact of tourist activity. The message highlighted:

  • Deixar dropping a bag of snacks seems trivial to humans, but permanently alters underground habitats
  • Processed Alimentos create ideal conditions for uncontrolled proliferation of microorganisms
  • Grilos, mites and spiders form emergent food webs that redistribute nutrients
  • Mofo invades geological layers and produces foul odor before dying
  • Espécies of invasive microorganisms were not present in the original ecosystem

The park called on visitors to “leave a mark wherever they are, whether big or small”, and called on tourists to “make the world we leave behind a better place than when we discovered it”.

Cave Ecosystem Fragilidade

Cavernas has maintained isolated ecosystems for millions of years. Espécies residents evolved in environments where external nutrients are virtually non-existent. The introduction of processed foods represents an unprecedented biological shock in the evolutionary history of these habitats.

The microorganisms present in processed foods differ from those that naturally colonize caves. Quando introduced, compete with native fauna, often winning because they are better adapted to environments with high sugar and starch content. The invaders’ subsequent death leaves toxic residues in the rocky soil.

Guardas Foresters in Carlsbad receive ongoing training to detect and remove debris as quickly as possible. Apesar efforts, microscopic damage has already occurred at the time of discovery. Total Restauração is biologically impossible after contamination.
