Corpus Christi’s traditional carpet took on a new form at Santuário Cristo Redentor this Thursday, June 4, 2026. Montado since 3 am, collective work has transformed more than 300 kilos of fabric scraps into a colorful mosaic more than 30 meters long. The initiative came from Consórcio Cristo Sustentável.

The celebration featured adoration and blessing of Santíssimo Sacramento, presided over by the archbishop of Rio of Janeiro, Cardeal Orani João Tempesta, at 6:30 am. The event integrated spirituality, art and concrete actions of social inclusion and environmental awareness. The technique used was patchwork, which joins different pieces of fabric to create larger compositions.

Projeto involved 25 collaborative workshops in two months

The making of the carpet mobilized participants over the course of around two months. Foram held 25 workshops that brought together art, spirituality and debates on sustainability. The material came from campaigns and partnerships that raised 300 kilos of fabric.

Mulheres, in a situation of social vulnerability, led much of the construction. Elas came from different regions than Rio of Janeiro and Baixada Fluminense, such as Seropédica, Nova Iguaçu, Madureira, Irajá, Rocinha, Horto, Cidade of Deus, Santa Teresa, Rio from Pedras and São Gonçalo.

  • Mulheres of Seropédica and Nova Iguaçu participated in the initial fabric selection workshops
  • Participantes from Rocinha and Cidade from Deus worked on assembling the larger parts
  • Grupos of Madureira and São Gonçalo finished details and embroidery
  • Ações included reception, training and income generation through art

The project promoted not only the creation of the carpet, but also moments of coexistence and reconstruction of dignity.

Dimensão social marks Consórcio Cristo Sustentável initiative

Consórcio Cristo Sustentável, formed by a partnership between Santuário Arquidiocesano Cristo Redentor, Obra Social Leste Um – Sol and Instituto Redemptor, coordinated the action. The group operates on three main axes: citizenship, entrepreneurship and employability, and environmental.

In 2025, the consortium provided more than 45 thousand services through social projects, training and preservation initiatives. Este year, the Corpus Christi mat reinforced the commitment to inclusion. The workshops offered a space of belonging and income opportunities for the participants.

The approach follows the principles of the circular economy and the UN Objetivos and Desenvolvimento Sustentável. Instead of discarding fabrics, the project gave new meaning to the material as an expression of faith.

Catholic Tradição gains contemporary contours in Corcovado

The practice of decorating streets with carpets for Corpus Christi has existed since the 13th century. No Brasil, the tradition remains alive, especially in historic cities. On top of Morro from Corcovado, Santuário Cristo Redentor has adapted custom to current demands.

Esta is the first time that an Corpus Christi rug has been made entirely using the patchwork technique, according to the organizers. The innovation carries symbolic value by showing that faith and care for the planet can go hand in hand.

Cardeal Orani João Tempesta led the ceremony that attends Código of Direito Canônico, reinforcing public veneration for Eucaristia. Após celebration, the carpet will go on exhibitions at locations and dates yet to be announced.

Previous Anos consolidated sustainable trajectory

This year’s project continues previous actions by Consórcio Cristo Sustentável. In 2024, the mat used coffee grounds, sawdust and eggshells, as well as salt, and featured the 17 Objetivos of Desenvolvimento Sustentável. Todo material was composted afterwards.

In 2025, around 460 kilos of plastic caps became carpet. The waste was crushed and transformed into a plastic wooden bench, ensuring total reuse. The sequence demonstrates consistent commitment to environmental practices.

Após ceremony, carpet moves on to new exhibitions

The material used in 2026 will not be discarded. Organizers plan to take the carpet to exhibitions that have yet to be announced. The idea is to expand the reach of the message of social and environmental transformation.

The initiative invites you to reflect on small daily attitudes. Marcos Martins, manager and environmental educator at Consórcio Cristo Sustentável, highlighted the potential of uniting spirituality and concrete changes in the surrounding reality.
