The latest escalation of violence in Líbano resulted in the deaths of at least four people and a UN peacekeeper on Thursday, even after the announcement of a new ceasefire agreement between Israel and the militant group Hezbollah, supported by Irã. The Israeli attacks took place in several villages in the south of Líbano, a region that has been the scene of intense clashes. A Serbian UN peacekeeper was hit by a mortar near Marjayoun, while two other people were injured in the same action. Continued fighting threatens diplomatic efforts to end the war and reopen Estreito from Ormuz, vital to the global flow of oil and gas.

Mortes occur after new truce agreement

The wave of violence manifested itself in Líbano after the announcement of an agreement to try to ease the persistent clashes. Local authorities confirmed the deaths, which increase tension in an already critical scenario. The Lebanese government accuses Hezbollah of dragging the country into war, in contrast to previous efforts to disarm the group. The Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, in turn, faces elections this year and has demonstrated his intention to continue the offensive until Hezbollah no longer poses a concrete threat.

Israeli forces have already seized approximately one-fifth of Lebanese territory since the start of rocket and drone attacks by Hezbollah, which demonstrated solidarity with Irã. The situation in Oriente Médio, according to US President Donald Trump, is complex and ceasefires often represent only a moderation in shooting, not an end to violence. Trump sought to downplay the diplomatic impasse and the failure of declared agreements, reflecting the difficulty in achieving lasting peace in the region.

UN Pacificador killed in combat zone

A Serbian peacekeeper lost his life in the crossfire, and two others were injured, when a mortar shell hit their position. The incident occurred near Marjayoun, a predominantly Christian town that has been the scene of recent intense clashes. The UN mission in the region, known as UNIFIL, and Ministério of Defesa of Sérvia confirmed the attack. However, authorities did not specify whether the shot came from Israeli forces or Hezbollah, keeping the origin of the attack under investigation.

The head of the Lebanese Hezbollah, Naim Qassem, declared on Thursday that as long as Lebanese villages are bombed and lives are lost, the north of Israel cannot be considered safe. Este’s position reinforces the group’s stance on retaliating against attacks, maintaining the cycle of violence. The safety of UN peacekeepers is a growing concern, given the intensity and unpredictability of conflicts in the area of operations.

Ataques Israelis target Lebanese villages

Agência Nacional of Notícias of Líbano, a state media outlet, reported that a drone attack resulted in the death of a motorcyclist and injured four other people in the village of Maaroub. Além Furthermore, the agency reported air strikes on the village of Sohmor, located in Vale of Bekaa, in the east of Líbano, which resulted in the death of three individuals and left others injured. Aerial Ações were also reported in several other areas in the south of the country.

The Israeli military did not immediately comment on the incidents. Previamente, the Israeli army had already issued warnings to the population, advising them not to enter areas of the south of Líbano where, according to their statements, installations belonging to Hezbollah were being attacked. The lack of immediate communication from Israel regarding the most recent attacks adds a layer of uncertainty and concern to the information released by Lebanese authorities, making it difficult to fully ascertain the facts.

Previous Acordos failed to contain the escalation

Hezbollah intensified its rocket launches days after Israel and Estados Unidos launched their surprise attack against Irã on February 28, marking a resumption of aggression. Antes of this incident, Israel was already conducting regular attacks on Líbano against what it claimed were militant targets. Esses attacks often resulted in civilian deaths, even after a previous ceasefire was established in 2024, highlighting the fragility of peace agreements. The population is skeptical about the effectiveness of the announced truces.

In the town of Sidon, south of Líbano, many residents reacted to the latest ceasefire announcement with great skepticism, drawing on past experiences of agreements that failed to contain violence. Mayada Hijazi expressed the general sentiment: “Every few days a ceasefire is announced, but people keep getting killed.” Salah Nassab added, highlighting the exhaustion of the population: “We just talk and don’t act. Continuamos returning to our homes and then we are displaced again, in a constant back and forth. Estamos very tired.” The recent history of conflict in Líbano is marked by a pattern of escalation and ineffective truces, resulting in a heavy human cost.

  • Marcos of escalating violence and negotiations:
  • * Cessar-previous fire signed in 2024 did not stop attacks.
    * Ataque surprise by Israel and USA against Irã on February 28th intensified the clashes.
    * Hezbollah has resumed rocket launches in solidarity with Irã.
    * Negociações mediated by the US seeks a new ceasefire between Israel and the Lebanese government.
    * Hezbollah conditions adherence to the ceasefire to the interruption of Israeli attacks and withdrawal of troops.

Nos Most recent fighting, Israeli troops have advanced further into the south of Líbano than at any other time since the end of the Israeli occupation, which took place between 1982 and 2000. Atualmente, Israel occupies about a fifth of Lebanese territory. Irã’s demand is for a complete ceasefire in Líbano and the withdrawal of Israeli troops to the positions they occupied at the start of the conflict. Esmail Qaani, head of Força Quds, Guarda Revolucionária’s elite unit, reiterated the goal of eliminating Israel from the region, reinforcing the complexity and depth of the conflict.

The repeated failures of diplomatic negotiations have led to exchanges of fire between Irã and the US in the Estreito region of Ormuz, which remains effectively closed. Antes of the war, this narrow sea passage was responsible for the transit of about a fifth of the world’s oil and gas, as well as large shipments of fertilizers and other goods. The US has focused on Iranian threats to commercial shipping and its own forces, while Irã has launched missile and drone attacks against Golfo countries that host US troops, demonstrating the scope of regional instability.
