The National Basketball Association (NBA) is preparing for one of its most anticipated annual events, the 2026 Draft, which will take place soon. The main ceremony, which defines the future of young talents in the league, is scheduled for June 23rd and 24th, at the Barclays Center, in Brooklyn. With the regular season and playoffs complete, all the teams’ attention is focused on choosing new players.

This rookie class is widely recognized for the depth of talent at its top positions. The projections of the main prospects remain consistent, but the real expectation lies in the decisions that each team will make with their picks.

Main Picks Defined at the Start of the 2026 Draft

The Washington Wizards team holds this year’s number one pick, a privilege the franchise earned after winning the lottery in May. The team finished last season with the worst performance in the league, recording just 17 wins and 65 losses. This is the first time the Wizards have selected at No. 1 since drafting John Wall in 2010. The path to this lottery win was different from the previous year; in 2025, the Dallas Mavericks jumped from low odds to select Cooper Flagg, who became Rookie of the Year, while Washington secured the first pick with a 14% probability, the best among the contenders.

Most projections point to BYU freshman AJ Dybantsa, a 19-year-old wing who led the nation in scoring and combines rare athleticism with refined shooting ability, as the Wizards’ likely pick. The consensus for the top four names generally includes Dybantsa, Kansas guard Darryn Peterson, Duke guard Cameron Boozer and North Carolina guard Caleb Wilson. Boozer enters the draft as the reigning college player of the year. The fate of each of these talents is the central question that guides all analysis panels.

Utah Jazz’s Decision Could Influence the Rest of the Lottery

The Utah Jazz are ranked second in the draft, and their selection could shape subsequent lottery picks. The most recent projections have Peterson as the popular pick for Utah, offering an ideal fit on the perimeter alongside young point guard Keyonte George. However, some analyzes also suggest Boozer, which reinforces that not even the top positions in the draft are fully defined.

The logic behind the preference for a point guard is evident in the current composition of the squad. The Utah Jazz reinforced their big box with Jaren Jackson Jr. during the trade deadline and already have Lauri Markkanen in the pivot position. This overloaded attack scenario directs the team to a need in the weapons sector. The Wizards’ decision on the first pick, therefore, will open or close crucial possibilities for the Jazz.

New NBA Lottery System Aims to Discourage Intentional Losses

The most significant draft news this spring doesn’t have to do with any particular prospect, but rather a structural change. NBA team owners have approved a new format for the lottery, dubbed the ‘3-2-1’ system, which defines the distribution of balls and will come into effect from the 2027 draft. This new model will expand the number of participating teams from 14 to 16 and flatten the odds, with the clear aim of combating the practice of “tanking” – the intentional loss of games to improve the chances of a high draft pick.

The main goal of this change is to eliminate the reward for intentional defeats. The league’s three worst teams will see their odds of getting the top pick drop from 14% to about 5.4%. Additionally, Commissioner Adam Silver was given expanded powers to punish suspected “tanking,” including fines that could reach $10 million, the forfeiture of draft picks and changes to a team’s draft position. This measure has already shown practical results; last season, the league fined the Utah Jazz $500,000 and the Indiana Pacers $100,000 for sitting out healthy players. The system will be tested until the 2029 draft, when the league will decide on its definitive permanence, seeking to maintain the competitive integrity of the championship.

What to Expect During Draft Selection Nights

The draft will again span two nights, with the first round on Tuesday and the second on Wednesday. In addition to the choices themselves, movement is expected in the exchange market. The negotiation involving Giannis Antetokounmpo must be resolved before the event, which could generate new capital opportunities for the Milwaukee Bucks, who are evaluating proposals.

While the Wizards grab the spotlight with the first pick, deeper questions permeate the draft sequence. Whether the Utah Jazz will find their point guard for the future, whether any team will trade up and pick Cameron Boozer, and how this will all play out as this will be the last draft under the old lottery rules. Starting next year, intentionally losing will be much more costly than before.
