Boxer Floyd Mayweather faces two serious charges for bad check on watch purchase
Former boxer Floyd Mayweather was formally indicted for issuing a bad check worth US$200,000, relating to the purchase of a luxury watch at a Las Vegas establishment. This information comes from court documents and an ESPN report.
According to documents filed on April 27 by the Clark County District Attorney’s Office, Floyd Joy Mayweather is accused of a serious crime: issuing or passing a check with intent to defraud and steal with a value exceeding $100,000. Online searches confirm “Joy” as his middle name, and ESPN highlighted the famous boxer’s indictment in this Las Vegas case.
The charge against Mayweather is linked to a US$200,000 transaction carried out on December 31, 2024, in which he purchased merchandise from the Gold and Beyond store, located at 376 W. Sahara Ave. When contacted on Tuesday, a representative of the establishment chose not to comment on the matter.
Broadcaster ESPN detailed that the acquisition in question was an Audemars Piguet watch.
“The check was deposited and returned unpaid, as the defendant was fully aware of,” stated the authorities involved in the case.
A certified letter was sent to the name and address on the check, informing Mayweather of the returned item and demanding payment in full, but the amount was not paid, according to a prosecutor. Las Vegas Justice Court records show a subpoena was issued on April 30 in lieu of an arrest warrant, with a first hearing held on Monday. Court documents do not mention an attorney for Mayweather in this specific check case.
This recent lawsuit appears to be yet another of the financial challenges facing Mayweather, adding to an already notable track record of tax issues. In April, the Review-Journal reported a tax debt lawsuit of more than $7 million against the boxer. The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has filed a notice of federal tax lien with the Clark County Recorder’s Office against Floyd J. Mayweather, identified as the taxpayer in the document.
The document detailed a debt balance of US$7,279,664.45, referring to two previous tax periods that had not been paid off.
That same single-page record listed Mayweather’s “residence” as an office suite in Boca Raton, Florida. The Las Vegas Review-Journal discovered that this address had previously been linked to the former boxing champion in another court case, unrelated to this matter.
Recognized globally as one of the greatest boxers of all time, Mayweather built an undefeated professional career of 50 wins and no losses over 21 years, winning world titles in five different weight classes.
Throughout his career, he has reportedly accumulated more than $1.1 billion in earnings, and in 2018 purchased a $10 million mansion in Las Vegas.
