The pharmaceutical company Eurofarma announced a considerable decrease in the prices of the drug Poviztra, known as ‘Brazilian Wegovy’, which aims to treat obesity. Starting prices start at R$295 and offer discounts of up to 48% for continued therapy.

These new conditions for biological semaglutide developed by Eurofarma, in collaboration with the former patent holder Novo Nordisk, are specifically aimed at individuals registered in the patient support initiative, the EuroCuida program.

Launched in April with more affordable prices, the program seeks to expand access to treatment and ensure continued adherence, since obesity is recognized as a chronic disease. This initiative is crucial for public health, as continuity of treatment is a challenge for many patients, and affordability is vital to combat the high prevalence of obesity in Brazil, improving long-term results. More than 80 thousand people had already joined EuroCuida in the previous month.

The lowest values will be applied at the initial stage of treatment. During the first two months, with dosages of 0.25 mg and 0.5 mg, each package will cost R$295. The third box, with a dose of 1 mg, will cost R$309, as long as it is purchased within 80 days of the initial purchase. This value represents a reduction of 48% compared to the program’s launch price, which was R$599.

To illustrate the difference in costs if the boxes are purchased separately, without registration and commitment to the program, the 0.25 mg and 0.5 mg versions cost R$445. The 1 mg version, even within the EuroCuida options without the full membership plan, costs R$490.

Andréa Frazão, director of Medical Prescriptions at Eurofarma, stated in a statement that “with the recent decrease in prices, we reinforce our commitment to making innovative therapies even more accessible to Brazilian citizens, offering products with a proven record of safety and effectiveness, used by millions of patients”.

Poviztra is a drug identical to Wegovy, from Novo Nordisk, which had also announced cuts in its prices last month. It is indicated for the treatment of obesity, overweight accompanied by comorbidities and steatotic liver disease associated with metabolic dysfunction (MASLD), popularly known as fatty liver.

Cost reduction also for type 2 diabetes medication

The pharmaceutical company also sells the equivalent version of Ozempic, the drug Extensior, which is prescribed to control type 2 diabetes and has also had its prices adjusted downwards.

For the beginning of treatment and within the purchase for the first three months, the 0.25 mg and 0.5 mg packages of Extensior remain priced at R$399, while the 1 mg dosage, which cost R$599, is now sold for R$309.
