Koné, a Canadian midfielder, was taken off the field at the Vancouver stadium with a fractured leg, transported on a stretcher, with a green item in his mouth while playing against Qatar in the World Cup. The nature of this object raised questions.

Mysterious object in player Koné’s mouth was meant for pain relief

The item identified was an immediate-acting analgesic. This drug is administered via inhalation, providing a faster effect compared to taking pills, essential in situations of serious trauma in sport for initial stabilization of pain. For this reason, its application is restricted to more serious injuries, such as the one suffered by the Canadian athlete.

The onset of the effect is noticed quickly, with the primary function of mitigating the intensity of the pain while the player is taken to hospital.

Koné was taken from the stadium directly to a hospital and will undergo a surgical procedure, according to a statement from Canada’s coach, Jesse Marsch. To date, no official medical report regarding the injury has been publicly released.

Details of the play that resulted in Koné’s serious fracture

The incident took place in the complementary stage of the match. The player Madibo, when trying to disarm Koné, hit the Canadian’s left leg, who immediately fell with the fracture already evident. Koné was immobilized on a stretcher and taken off the pitch.

Madibo walked away from the scene, while Canadian athletes approached him. Upon realizing the seriousness of the situation, the Qatari midfielder expressed deep consternation and observed medical care from a distance.

The Qatari player was penalized with expulsion, leaving the field visibly shaken. Subsequently, on social media platforms, Madibo received numerous messages of solidarity.

Coach Jesse Marsch reported that the sound of Koné’s leg breaking was audible even on the field, a type of serious injury that unfortunately marks the history of World Cups. The Canadian coach also mentioned that Madibo expressed his apologies for the incident.

As the match progressed, Canada scored a 6-0 defeat over Qatar, securing their first victory in World Cup editions and taking the lead in Group B. The goals were scored by Jonathan David (three), Larin, Saliba and an own goal by Al Mannai, in a game where two Qatari athletes were sent off.
