A 61-year-old man suffered serious injuries when he was hit by a vehicle, which had irregular documentation and was driven by an unlicensed driver, on Wednesday night (17), in the Pongelupe neighborhood, located in the Barreiro Region, in Belo Horizonte.

The incident was captured on security cameras. The footage shows the car speeding down the street, running over and dragging the pedestrian who was walking on the sidewalk. Two other people who were nearby noticed the car approaching and avoided the impact for a fraction of a second. The vehicle only stopped after colliding with a property.

According to information from the Military Police, the 23-year-old driver lost control of the automatic car, claiming to have confused the brake and accelerator pedals. Before hitting the pedestrian, the car had already collided with another stationary vehicle, which is a warning about the importance of adequate training, especially for drivers inexperienced with this type of transmission.

Upon arriving at the scene, the police found the victim already rescued by the Mobile Emergency Care Service (Samu), which had transported her to Hospital João XXIII. The man was in serious condition, unconscious, and would require urgent surgical intervention.

The police report details that the woman stated that she started the process to obtain her driver’s license, but did not complete it. She explained that she asked the owner of the car to drive it, as a friend had commented that automatic cars were simpler to maneuver.

Shortly after the impact, individuals present at the scene began to question the driver about what had happened. According to the PM, she was absent for a brief period, claiming to have received threats from members of the public, but then returned and waited for the police authorities to arrive.

The driver was subjected to a breathalyzer test, which resulted negative for alcohol consumption.

The 35-year-old owner of the car was in the passenger seat during the accident. He told the police that he gave the vehicle keys to the woman so she could drive it on public roads, and that he was present as a companion.

Civil Police experts were on site to carry out the surveys. In addition to the cars directly involved, the accident also resulted in damage to a clinic.

The owner of the affected property reported that the car collided with the garden, causing cracks in the internal and external surfaces of the walls, and damaging the gate, which became locked.

The Military Police reported that both the driver and the owner of the vehicle were taken to the police station to give statements, both accompanied by their lawyers.

The portal was awaiting, until the closing of this article, a position from the Civil Police on the case.
