In a turnaround of statements, Thierry Henry expressed support for Cristiano Ronaldo after previous criticism. The former French striker, world champion in 1998, had challenged the Portuguese player’s performance in the World Cup debut against the Democratic Republic of Congo, but has now changed his position, emphasizing the relevance of the number 7 for the Portugal team.

The commentator compared the debate around big names in football, stating: “Many considered Lionel Messi the solution to Argentina’s problems, while others thought Cristiano Ronaldo could be a problem for Portugal. Cristiano Ronaldo will never be a problem; he represents the solution.” The change in stance from Henry, an influential analyst, highlights the complexity of media narratives surrounding high-profile athletes, which often oscillate between criticism and praise based on momentary performance and the perception of their historical impact.

For the former France athlete, Cristiano Ronaldo’s performance below expectations in the opening match of the World Cup was attributed to the strategy of the coaching staff and the role of the other team members.

Henry detailed his vision, explaining that “they bear the responsibility of positioning Cristiano Ronaldo in the most advantageous way possible on the pitch so that he can be more decisive.”

Official FIFA statistics revealed a discreet performance by Cristiano Ronaldo in the game, reaching the tournament with his longest period without goals in the last two years. According to calculations published by the entity on its website, the number 7 had the fourth lowest offensive impact of the match, surpassing only three defenders: Tuanzebe, from the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Renato Veiga and Tomas Araújo, from Portugal.

The star was also the target of observations in Portugal, including Thierry Henry’s initials. The Fox Sports channel commentator gave an example of a moment from the match to illustrate his analysis:

“For those watching at home, the team needs to score (goals), it’s not your sole responsibility. If you make that run, you force the defense to make a decision, but he, because he wants to score, intercepts Bruno Fernandes’ path. If he entered that small area, the defense would be forced to follow him, and Bruno Fernandes would just have to finish. However, as he looks for the goal, he puts himself in the path of the delayed pass, we see two players and the defense finds it easier. The team needs to score, no you; and you noticed Bruno Fernandes’ reaction, something like: ‘Let it go, run and make space so I can finish’.”

Subsequently, Cristiano Ronaldo used his social networks to address Portuguese fans. As team captain, he took responsibility for the result and sought to convey a message of confidence and optimism:

“It wasn’t the start we were hoping for, but it’s far from over. Head up and full focus on the next match”, published the number 7.

Portugal ended the first round in third place in Group K. Colombia leads the group after beating Uzbekistan. The Portuguese team will return to the pitch next Tuesday to face the Uzbek team, with the match scheduled for 2pm (Brasília time), in Houston.
