Disney and Pixar are projecting a robust performance for “Toy Story 5” at the box office, with estimates that the film will become the biggest opening of the year so far, reaching the $160 million mark. The animation had already set an important record by registering the second biggest opening of all time for an animated film, with US$71 million, behind only the US$72.2 million of “Incredibles 2”, released in 2018.
The public rated the film with an A grade on CinemaScore, demonstrating a positive reception that indicates a better performance than “Toy Story 4”, which in 2019 reached US$120.9 million in its opening weekend. The new chapter is directed by Andrew Stanton, veteran of the franchise, with Kenna Harris acting as co-director.
In contrast to the success of “Toy Story 5”, Steven Spielberg and Universal’s original sci-fi production “Disclosure Day” faced a sharp 69% drop in grosses. The film is expected to gross around US$17 million in its second weekend, after opening with US$44 million, with a projection of approximately US$78 million in total box office sales in the United States.
On the other hand, “Obsession”, a hit from Focus Features, is in its sixth weekend and will finally have a gross below its debut of US$17.2 million. The film is expected to gross around US$14 million, bringing its total in the United States to approximately US$215 million, solidifying its position as Focus’s highest-grossing film both domestically and internationally, where it has already surpassed the US$300 million mark.
Among the most recent releases, Neon’s horror film “Leviticus,” which received acclaim at Sundance, is expected to gross around $3 million. “The Death of Robin Hood”, starring Hugh Jackman and directed by Michael Sarnoski, known for “Pig” and “A Quiet Place: The First Day”, is aiming for revenue of approximately US$2.5 million by telling the story of the last days of the famous outlaw.
