The beginning of João Fonseca’s participation in the grass season was marked by a runner-up finish in the ATP 500 doubles competition in Halle, Germany. The partnership between the Brazilian tennis player and the German Daniel Altmaier was overcome by the French Theo Arribage and Albano Olivetti in two straight sets, with partials of 7/6(2) and 6/4, in the decision played this Sunday.
After the match, João Fonseca expressed his gratitude to his teammate and highlighted the relevance of the feat. “I need to thank my partner! We entered as lucky losers and reached the final. I love being a singles player, but it was a great achievement to reach this doubles final”, declared the athlete.
Last Tuesday, João Fonseca’s campaign in the singles ended with a defeat to German Yannick Hanfmann, 59th in the world rankings, by double 6/2. Fonseca and Altmaier had been eliminated in the qualifying phase, but gained a place in the main doubles draw as lucky losers, benefiting from Nick Kyrgios’ withdrawal due to injury.
The Brazilian tennis player was looking for his second doubles trophy in his professional career. In February, he won the Rio Open title alongside Marcelo Melo, in his first appearance in ATP 500 tournaments in the sport, a significant milestone for the young talent.
Development of the final match in Halle
The first set of the decision presented a remarkable balance, with no break of serve recorded by the pairs. The dispute continued to the tie-break, where the French duo of Arribage and Olivetti demonstrated greater consistency, closing the partial with a 7-2 advantage.
In the second set, the game had a turning point when Fonseca was unable to pass the ball through the net, resulting in the first break of serve in favor of the French, who took a 3-2 lead. With a solid performance from Olivetti on the serve, the French duo maintained control of the match until the end. Despite a late reaction from João Fonseca and Daniel Altmaier, they were unable to reverse the break and were beaten 2 sets to 0.
Daniel Altmaier also made a point of thanking the partnership. “I want to thank my partner, we had an incredible week! Our team has incredible people and we share the same values,” said the German tennis player.
João Fonseca’s trajectory in the 2026 season
The Halle tournament marked João Fonseca’s debut on grass in 2026. His season began on hard courts in Oceania, where he faced injuries and participated in just one game, being eliminated in the opening round of the Australian Open. Later, in clay tournaments in Buenos Aires and Rio, the Brazilian failed to perform well. However, the scenario began to change for the young athlete.
On hard courts, at the prestigious tournaments in Miami and Indian Wells, Fonseca faced some of the world’s top players, including Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz, in high-quality matches. The clay phase of the season had its ups and downs, but culminated in an excellent campaign at Roland Garros, where he reached the quarter-finals, recording an important victory over Novak Djokovic.
