Sony’s gaming sector faces a difficult period in 2026. According to a recent report from Alinea Analytics, the title Ghost of Yotei, developed by Sucker Punch, became the main driver of PlayStation Studios’ exclusive sales throughout the year. The game, which hit the market at the end of 2025, has already sold almost 5 million units globally, with 1.1 million of them sold in the first half of 2026 alone, sustaining most of the Japanese giant’s performance.
This reality is accentuated when observing the performance of other exclusive games released in 2026. Titles such as Marathon and Saros, despite being well received by specialized critics, did not achieve the expected commercial success. The obstacles in Marathon were already known, and Saros, despite having gained a fan base for Returnal upon its release, is now at risk of not covering its production costs, according to estimates by Alinea Analytics.
PlayStation’s portfolio currently reflects a scenario close to the most unfavorable for the first half of the year, certainly a situation not desired by the company’s leadership. The reliance on Ghost of Yotei, a game from the previous year, as the main revenue generator, surpassing more recent releases, reveals a worrying shortage of new blockbusters with broad popular appeal.
While the new 2026 titles don’t take off, an older game, Gran Turismo 7, stands out for its constant performance. Released in 2022, this title sustains the series’ enduring popularity and recorded more sales in 2026 than MLB The Show 26, securing second position in Sony’s annual ranking. Completing the top 5 are Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 and Astro Bot, both from 2023, while Saros is only in sixth place overall.
The Alinea Analytics survey reveals a peculiarity about Ghost of Yotei: despite selling a smaller volume of units compared to its predecessor, Ghost of Tsushima, the game manages to generate greater revenue. This feat is attributed to its ability to maintain the launch value for an extended period, resulting in more significant profits for each copy sold.
The conclusion for PlayStation is clear: the gaming unit urgently needs to strengthen its exclusive catalog. Expectations now turn to Marvel’s Wolverine, scheduled to be released in September 2026. However, the path to an immediate triumph is not without difficulties.
With the September calendar and the following months of the year already saturated with major releases from other developers, Wolverine will face strong competition, which could prevent the game from reaching millions of units sold quickly. It will be essential to observe the performance of Insomniac Games’ next title to see if it will, at the very least, achieve leadership in sales during its debut month.
