Czech tennis player Marketa Vondrousova, Wimbledon champion in 2023, was punished with a four-year suspension after refusing to take an out-of-competition drug test. The news was officially communicated this Monday by the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA), highlighting the seriousness of the infraction.

The entity reported that Vondrousova did not deliver the sample requested by a doping control officer to her residence, at around 8 pm on December 3, 2025, after being duly notified. The sanction imposed will be in force until June 21, 2030, removing the athlete from competitions for a long period.

In a statement, ITIA clarified that the evidence presented did not offer an acceptable or convincing justification for refusing the exam.

During the hearing process, the athlete argued that the decision not to take the test was influenced by a period of intense stress, mental health issues and concerns related to her personal safety. However, the court responsible for judging the case concluded that the arguments raised by Vondrousova were not considered sufficient to justify the refusal.

The ITIA statement also explained that, according to current anti-doping rules, the starting point for applying a sanction for test refusal is the same as that which would be imposed if the test result was positive. This measure aims to ensure that athletes who attempt to dope do not obtain a more lenient punishment simply by refusing to submit to testing, protecting the integrity of the sport.

Marketa Vondrousova spoke out on her social media, reiterating that she never used banned substances. She highlighted that she took another anti-doping test just three days after the incident, and it showed a negative result.

The tennis player stated: “I have never had a positive test. Throughout my career, I have undergone countless anti-doping controls and have always entered the court with a clear conscience.”

At 26 years old, Vondrousova has two Grand Slam finals in her record. The highlight of her career was winning the Wimbledon title in 2023, which established her as one of the main players on the circuit.
