Brazilian tennis player João Fonseca confirmed his absence from the ATP 250 in Eastbourne, England, this week. Despite being the second seed and already having his opponent defined for the first round, the athlete chose to abandon the dispute due to a shoulder problem. The strategic decision aims to fully recover for Wimbledon, the third Grand Slam of the season, which takes place next week. Fonseca detailed on his social networks: “After feeling slight discomfort in my right shoulder, my team and I decided, as a precaution, not to compete in the Eastbourne ATP. The objective is to arrive in the best possible shape at Wimbledon.”

Recently, the national athlete participated in the ATP 500 in Halle, Germany, where he was defeated in the opening round of the singles bracket. However, Fonseca showed good performance in doubles, reaching the final alongside German tennis player Daniel Altmeier. This experience was crucial for the young talent to acquire the necessary adaptation to the grass surface, a type of court that offers the smallest number of competitions on the circuit throughout the year, making preparation even more valuable for major events.

Fonseca’s next big challenge will be the prestigious Wimbledon tournament, the following week, where he is ranked 24th. This privileged position in the rankings is a significant factor, as the competition’s draw protects him from clashes with the eight best tennis players in the world, at least until the round of 16, providing a potentially less arduous path in the early stages of the Grand Slam.
