Great Wall Motor (GWM) Brazil confirmed the arrival of the unprecedented Ora 5, its first fully electric SUV for the Brazilian market. Expected to be in dealerships from June 24th, the vehicle will be offered for a starting price of R$159,000, marking its entry as the automaker’s most affordable option in the compact sports utility vehicle segment.

With its strategy so far centered on the Ora 03 hatch and the Haval hybrid series, the Chinese automaker is now expanding its presence to one of the most sought-after sectors in the national market. The Ora 5 will be available in a single configuration, with all equipment included, aiming to offer a strong value for money. The model seeks to compete directly with combustion-powered compact SUVs from established brands, such as the Volkswagen T-Cross, Hyundai Creta and Honda HR-V, signaling a broader push into the mass segment.

Electric motor performance, battery and recharging options

Equipped with an electric motor positioned on the front axle, the GWM Ora 5 delivers a power of 204 horsepower and an immediate torque of 26.5 kgfm. This configuration allows the SUV to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 7.7 seconds, reaching a top speed of 170 km/h, electronically controlled.

As for autonomy, the Ora 5 reaches 349 km according to Inmetro (PBEV) tests and up to 435 km according to the international WLTP standard. For quick recharges at DC points of up to 120 kW, the estimated time to go from 30% to 80% charged is just 20 minutes. On alternating current (AC) connections, the vehicle’s maximum support is 6.6 kW, with the manual indicating around 8.5 hours for a full recharge at 11 kW stations.

Additionally, the SUV offers three regenerative braking settings and features Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) functionality. This technology allows the vehicle to act as an external 6 kW generator, capable of supplying energy to various electronic devices.

Structure, size and internal capacity of the model

Built on a different platform from that used in the Ora 03 hatch, the Ora 5 has notably larger dimensions. It measures 4,471 mm long, 1,833 mm wide, 1,641 mm tall and has a wheelbase of 2,720 mm. Compared to the smaller GWM model, the SUV is 236 mm longer and has 70 mm more wheelbase. However, even with the larger height, the curb weight remains at 1,685 kg, similar to that of the hatch.

  • Engine:Front electric
  • Power/torque:204 hp / 26.5 kgfm
  • 0 to 100 km/h:7.7 seconds
  • Battery:58.3 kWh (Type LFP)
  • Autonomy (Inmetro):349 km
  • Length / Wheelbase:4,471mm / 2,720mm

With versatility in mind for use in cities and highways, the vehicle has a ground clearance of 175 mm. Its entry and exit angles are 17° and 25° respectively. The luggage compartment offers 362 liters of capacity and has an electric opening, which can be activated remotely using an app.

Technology and connectivity innovations with Coffee OS 3

The vehicle’s interior is equipped with the third generation of GWM’s operating system, Coffee OS 3, originally launched on the company’s higher-end models globally. This interface incorporates artificial intelligence to interpret more than 300 voice commands, allowing control of features such as air conditioning, navigation system and even the sunroof curtain. The multimedia center stands out for its 14.6-inch screen with Full HD resolution, wireless mirroring support for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a customizable shortcut bar for the Brazilian context.

The instrument panel is also fully digital, with customization options and a 10.25-inch screen that offers up to three display modes. The digital technology package also includes a 50 W induction cell phone charger, three USB ports (two of them Type C) and automatic software updates via the cloud (OTA). Through the My GWM app, the owner can perform remote operations, such as locking the doors, locating the car, scheduling recharges and activating the air conditioning.

Standard features and advanced safety features

The GWM Ora 5 comes standard with a comprehensive semi-autonomous driving assistance package (ADAS 2+). The following are some of the key security features built in:

  • Autonomous emergency braking (AEB)
  • Intelligent Adaptive Cruise Control with Cornering Assist (IACC)
  • Lane Keeping and Centering Assist (LKAS/LCK)
  • Front and rear cross traffic alert with automatic braking (FCTB/RCTB)
  • Blind Spot Monitoring (BSD) and Rear Collision Warning (RCW)
  • Traffic Sign Recognition (TSR)
  • 540° camera with transparent chassis function
  • Six airbags (front, side and curtain)

In terms of comfort and convenience, the cabin has seats covered in synthetic leather, with electrical adjustments and ventilation for the front seats. The driver’s seat also has position memory and a welcome function. The model features a 1.65 m² fixed panoramic glass roof, equipped with an electric curtain, automatic air conditioning with N95 filter, air vents for rear passengers and a central console with a 3.2-liter climate-controlled compartment. The audio system consists of 9 integrated speakers, amplifier and subwoofer, delivering a power of 216 W.

For the body, the GWM Ora 5 will be available in four shades: Crystal White, Zenith Grey, Khalifa Black and Electric Blue. The interior finish changes depending on the selected exterior color, with options for Urban Gray or Hazelnut Brown patterns. A temporary 17-inch spare tire was strategically included in the lower part of the trunk, specifically to adapt to Brazilian highway conditions.

GWM’s future plans for the Ora 5: hybrid and flex versions

Exclusive investigations carried out during the Beijing Motor Show in April indicated that GWM plans the Ora 5 as a multi-energy vehicle, including a version with a turbo flex engine in the future. Although the initial launch in Brazil is the 100% electric variant, in China there are already pure combustion and full hybrid configurations, demonstrating the versatility of the model’s platform and the brand’s intention to serve different consumer profiles.

The Ora 5’s combustion options are equipped with a 1.5-liter four-cylinder turbo engine, with the variable geometry turbo (VGT) technology highlighted by the Chinese manufacturer. This engine develops 181 horsepower, transmitted to the front wheels by a 7-speed DCT transmission. Acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h is achieved in 8.9 seconds, and the maximum speed reaches 190 km/h. As for consumption, it is estimated at 15.6 km/l in the WLTC cycle.

In full hybrid configurations, the operating system mirrors that of the larger Haval H6 HEV2 model. In these versions, the combustion engine is also a 1.5 four-cylinder, but with 154 horsepower. A 188 horsepower electric motor on the front axle complements the engine. Drive is via a two-speed DHT transmission.

Ora 5 as a pillar for the new GWM factory in Espírito Santo

With Haval H6 production currently concentrated in Iracemápolis, São Paulo, GWM has already outlined plans to expand its activities in the country, establishing a second industrial hub in Aracruz, Espírito Santo. This future manufacturing unit is seen as an essential pillar for the company’s expansion strategy in Brazilian territory.

In this context of growth, the Ora 5 emerges as a strong candidate to be GWM’s vehicle with the highest sales volume, a decisive factor in validating the new production capacity of the Espírito Santo factory. The SUV segment, despite high competition, maintains its relevance in Brazil, and a model with attractive prices like the Ora 5 can solidify the brand’s presence in this market.

By introducing the Ora 5, and considering its multiple potential configurations, GWM demonstrates its intention to transcend the niche of mid- and large-size electrified SUVs. The priority goal now is to gain a significantly more expressive and assertive market share in the Brazilian mass segment.
