The Sapporo District Court is about to announce, this Wednesday (25), the sentences for three defendants implicated in the fatal attack that culminated in the death of university student Tomoya Hase in the city of Ebetsu. Among the defendants awaiting the verdict is Haoto Kawamura, 21 years old and from Kushiro, who faces serious charges of robbery followed by death and fraud. The court decision marks a crucial step in the investigation of the crime that occurred in 2024.

The session, which is led by judge Masayuki Takasugi, will focus its efforts on the dosimetry of sentences. The prosecution requested the imposition of life imprisonment for Kawamura, given the nature of the robbery followed by death, and fixed-term sentences for the other two involved in the case. On the other hand, the defense teams argued that their clients’ participation was secondary in the development of the events, requesting milder sentences than those required by the prosecution.

This trial represents the first series of verdicts to be handed down between the six individuals who have been indicted in total for involvement in the crime. The court’s decision at this initial stage sets an important precedent and could directly influence the direction and future sentences of other cases related to the attack, indicating that the case will still have significant developments in Japanese justice.
