Valve revealed that the Steam Machine, its latest gaming console, hits the market with an ambitious proposal and a cost that is close to twice that of other equipment. Launched this Tuesday, June 22, 2026, at 2:00 pm GMT-3, the device seeks to redefine the gaming experience, despite its cubic shape and high price. The company positions the Steam Machine not as a direct competitor to win the “console war”, but rather as a distinct alternative in the world of video games.
Since the pioneering Magnavox Odyssey launched in 1972, the fundamental premise of video game consoles has remained unchanged: offering a simplified way to play exclusive titles on television. Manufacturers like Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft have dedicated decades to improving this basic formula: purchase the device, connect it to the TV, insert the game and start the fun.
However, Steam Machine aspires to go beyond this tradition. He comes up with a vision of a gaming system that offers greater freedom and a virtually unlimited catalog of titles, although this comes with a considerably larger investment. Valve said the starting price will be US$1,049 without a controller and US$1,128 with a gamepad included. This pricing stands out, given that the performance of the Steam Machine does not significantly surpass Sony’s PlayStation 5, a console launched five and a half years ago and which, even after three readjustments, costs US$650 and presents sharper images in games such as Cyberpunk 2077 and Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered, according to specialized tests. The high value, however, is justified by the proposal of an ever-expanding game catalog and the flexibility of a PC platform, something that traditional consoles do not offer.
The Steam Machine’s difference lies in its hybrid nature: it is essentially an optimized computer, designed to operate with the practicality of a console. The device stands out for being extremely silent and maintaining a low temperature, in addition to being notably smaller than the PlayStation 5. Its fluidity of use is surprising, and it guarantees full compatibility with any modern gamepad available on the market.
