Paraguay and Australia face each other this Thursday (25), at 11pm (Brasília time), at Levi’s Stadium, in Santa Clara, in the United States, in the third and final round of Group D of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The two teams arrive with three points each. The United States leads with six points and has already secured a place. The winner of the match guarantees direct qualification to the round of 16. In the event of a draw, Australia will advance in second place thanks to their superior goal difference (0 against Paraguay’s -2).
Coach Gustavo Alfaro will not be able to count on midfielder Miguel Almirón, suspended after receiving a red card in the previous round. Paraguay should maintain its base with Gatito Fernández in goal and Gustavo Gómez in defense. Julio Enciso remains the main reference in the attack.
On the Australian side, coach Tony Popovic deals with absences due to injury, such as Mathew Leckie. The team should repeat the more compact formation, with an emphasis on solid defense led by Harry Souttar. Nestory Irankunda appears as a speed option in attack.
The confrontation marks the reunion between South Americans and Australians. Historically, the Socceroos have an advantage in recent friendlies, but Paraguay showed progress in the group stage with good defensive organization.
Probable lineups Paraguay (4-4-2):
Gatito Fernández; Juan Cáceres, Gustavo Gómez, Junior Alonso, Fabián Balbuena; Ramón Sosa, Andrés Cubas, Damián Bobadilla (or Maurício), Julio Enciso; Kaku, Antonio Sanabria.
Australia (5-4-1 or 4-3-3):
Mathew Ryan (or Patrick Beach); Jason Geria, Harry Souttar, Alessandro Circati, Jordan Bos; Nestory Irankunda, Aiden O’Neill, Connor Metcalfe, Jackson Irvine; Mohamed Touré.
The referee will be Frenchman Clément Turpin, known for his rigor in high-level games. The stadium should receive good attendance, with mixed fans in the USA.
