Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser Detail the Challenge of Leading ‘Dutton Ranch’ After the Final Impact of ‘Yellowstone’
The production of ‘Dutton Ranch’, one of the long-awaited spin-offs of ‘Yellowstone’, had its renewal for a second season confirmed last Wednesday. The news did not come as a surprise, given that the initial seven episodes of the first season (which totals nine) recorded audience records since their premiere.
However, the continuation of the ‘Yellowstone’ universe brought with it great expectations from Paramount Television Studios and 101 Studios. The goal is to expand the successful franchise with ‘Dutton Ranch’ and ‘Marshals’ (previously called ‘Yellowstone’, aired on CBS and also renewed). Those projections extended to leads Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser, now serving as executive producers on ‘Dutton Ranch,’ who shared their perspectives with The Hollywood Reporter at the start of the season.
Kelly Reilly described the decision to embark on ‘Dutton Ranch’ as an extremely serious step. In an interview given in May, alongside her co-star, the actress emphasized that it was not a choice made without reflection, given the great pride they both felt for ‘Yellowstone’ and its universe. She pointed out that “they are big shoes to fill”, referring to the magnitude of the project. For Reilly, there was no one better suited to play Beth than herself, except creator Taylor Sheridan, and that was an essence she wanted to preserve.
Before the release of the series, the two stars of the original production detailed the meticulous care that went into the execution of ‘Dutton Ranch’, which stands as the second spin-off of ‘Yellowstone’ not scripted by Taylor Sheridan. They expressed their desire to build a new legacy and gave clues about the outcome of the first season, in addition to commenting on the departure of showrunner Chad Feehan, while planning the next steps. Reilly has stated that she’s not sure Beth and Rip are destined for peace, but points out that “that doesn’t stop them from wanting it,” which, to her, is where the drama lies.
The immersion of the actors in the executive production of the series
Behind the scenes of the transition between the end of ‘Yellowstone’ and the beginning of negotiations for ‘Dutton Ranch’ reveal that Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser had little time off. The question that lingered was whether they managed to disconnect from the characters of Beth and Rip.
Cole Hauser mentioned that the break was brief, perhaps a month for Kelly, who remained active in other projects.
Kelly Reilly has confirmed that, shortly after completing the final season of ‘Yellowstone’, she has thrown herself into a new series in Wales, the Sky drama ‘Under Salt Marsh’. It then quickly returned to pre-production on ‘Dutton Ranch’, indicating that the break was not that extensive.
Hauser described the pace as “very fast”. He explained that by being involved in the process from the beginning of a new series, the team was faced with the challenge of “how do we create this new world? How do we tell the story in a different way? How do we keep the characters consistent but take them to a new place with challenges and new landscapes and new people to deal with?” He acknowledged the complexity, but said they accepted the challenge as executive producers and hope the public appreciates the result.

Near the end of ‘Yellowstone,’ both Reilly and Hauser had expressed that if Taylor Sheridan wrote it, they would be on board for a spin-off. Upon discovering Beth and Rip’s survival at the end of the original series, the conversation about the characters’ continuity began immediately.
The actress highlighted the seriousness of the decision, stating that she and Hauser did not take it lightly. Both felt immense pride in the original production and its expansive universe. For Reilly, the main motivation for taking on the role of executive producer on ‘Dutton Ranch’ was the imperative need to protect the essence of the characters Beth and Rip, who have become part of her artistic DNA, ensuring that Taylor Sheridan’s legacy was honored and that the transition to a new narrative context maintained the depth and authenticity that audiences expected. She mentioned the enormous responsibility of bringing these characters to life outside of Sheridan’s direct script, since his previous lines were entirely his.
For Beth, it was time for a new chapter. In addition to the physical change of scenery (from Montana to Texas), internally, after the death of his father, John Dutton (played by Kevin Costner, who died in the final season premiere of ‘Yellowstone’), the central question for Reilly was “how does this change anyone?”. The actress was interested in exploring the trauma, struggle and inner world of a woman who, after dedicating everything to protecting a legacy, finds herself without that compass.
Asked whether the smash success of ‘Yellowstone’ had given them a position of strength to demand more or to rise to executive producer on ‘Dutton Ranch,’ Hauser dismissed that prospect.
The actor sees the new role more as a responsibility. He highlighted that the role of executive producer involves numerous on-set duties, going beyond his own interests to focus on the “big picture” of the production.
Kelly Reilly added, stating that the project has become something of great importance for the entire cast and crew.
Hauser highlighted the presence of a talented cast, including names like Mark Menchaca, JR Villarreal, Ed Harris and Annette Bening, and the importance of ensuring everyone had their voices heard. For him and Kelly, the mission was to ensure everyone felt comfortable as this would result in the best performance. He explained that, being a new experience for them too, the desire was for the actors to feel creative freedom and have a space to express their ideas.
Reilly reiterated her desire to protect the characters, something that was very important to her. The actress expressed that no one would be better suited to deal with Beth than her, other than Taylor Sheridan, as she knows her deeply. She opposed superficial or clichéd approaches to Beth and Rip, always seeking to “elevate the situation, take it seriously, and try to find the truth”.
Hauser praised Kelly’s ability to share ideas, also mentioning Christina Alexandra Voros, director and executive producer.
Reilly and Taylor Sheridan remain executive producers, which allowed the team to start over and move forward with the project.
Challenges of Filming and the Desire for Longevity for ‘Dutton Ranch’
The first season of the series required eight months of filming.
Cole Hauser confirmed the long duration of the recordings. He explained that by taking on the role of executive producer, weekends disappear, and the focus shifts to the demands of the work week. The actor stated that they were prepared for the challenge, and that the final result would depend on the public’s reception.
The question was raised of how difficult it would have been for Taylor Sheridan to let go of Beth, considering her one of her favorite characters.
Kelly Reilly acknowledged that Beth was, in fact, one of Sheridan’s most beloved creations. The actress believes that Taylor used Beth as a kind of voice for himself, and that the character was rich in complexity, with her world views and ways of dealing with situations. Reilly expressed pleasure in playing her.
The complexity of determining the ideal outcome for Beth and Rip in ‘Yellowstone’, breaking with the peace they seemed to find at the beginning of the spin-off, was a point of discussion. It was also questioned whether the ‘Dutton Ranch’ fire plot was inspired by the Los Angeles fires of 2025.

Cole Hauser mentioned the frequency of fires in Montana, where filming for ‘Yellowstone’ took place annually, with the constant presence of fire.
Kelly Reilly added, remembering that transmissions were interrupted and smoke was constant, with helicopters visible in the images, elements that are part of life in the region.
Hauser argued that fire was the most effective way to reduce everything to ashes, referring to the few belongings that Beth managed to save: the clothes on her back, the horses and her son.
Reilly added, noting that a photograph of her father was all she had left.
The couple had just “five minutes to swing peacefully on the porch.”
Hauser recalled that during filming, they returned to Montana to shoot the opening scene, and both he and Reilly needed some “fresh air”, which they managed to find at that time.
Kelly Reilly mused that she’s not sure whether these characters are karmically destined for peace, but that aspiration, for her, is exactly where the story’s dramatic intensity lies.
Expectations about ‘Dutton Ranch’ being a multi-season series have been questioned, with mentions of rumors that it could run for five seasons.
Reilly clarified that there was no official mention of five seasons and that the focus is on “one season at a time.”
Hauser described the pace as “crazy”, with no time to reflect on long-term plans as they filmed until the end of March and are on tour to promote the series.
Reilly revealed that there are already some ideas for the second season, based on where the first season ends. Despite not being able to detail the ending, she expressed excitement about the direction the narrative will take, already having a clear idea of where the next season will begin.
If ‘Dutton Ranch’ becomes a success comparable to ‘Yellowstone,’ the motivation to continue for many seasons would be great.
Kelly Reilly emphasized the importance of a good script. She argued that, in this profession, one should not be excessively attached to projects. The actress expressed gratitude for the opportunity and a willingness to continue if the work is something they are proud of; otherwise, she and Hauser are “just two actors working and that’s fine.”
Cole Hauser stated that it would be “very cool” to continue, if the audience maintains the same level of engagement and passion for the program, as has happened with ‘Yellowstone’ over the last ten years. He would love to continue to entertain viewers.
The balance between the legacy of ‘Yellowstone’ and the construction of new narratives
A touching conversation between Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser’s characters at the beginning of ‘Dutton Ranch’ about John Dutton was highlighted. The series not only maintained ‘Yellowstone’s’ loyal audience, but also attracted new viewers. The question raised was how to balance this inspiration in the original story with the need to develop new arcs.
Kelly Reilly explained that it is inevitable to use the story of ‘Yellowstone’ as a resource and talk about past events. She would even like there to be more discussions about this in the series, but life moves forward, new characters and situations emerge. Before they know it, they are already immersed in this “new version”, this “new story”. For the actress, the interesting thing is that the audience that has been following for six years knows the characters in depth, while new viewers are discovering them, which she considers “very fun”.

Hauser revealed that his favorite part comes when the characters have the opportunity to “take a breather,” like in the aforementioned couch scene. For him and Kelly, these are moments to “take a deep breath” and for the characters to recognize what they are experiencing. The actor highlighted the strength of the relationship between the two, who even in the midst of extreme challenges, “always find a place for each other”. This dynamic is something they’ve often discussed throughout the season: where to find those moments of connection.
Reilly emphasized that the loss of John Dutton, her father, and the intensity of her love for him, affected her deeply throughout the production.
Changes in creative leadership and projections for the future of the series
Showrunner Chad Feehan’s departure after the first season of ‘Dutton Ranch’ was widely reported as a mutual decision. The difficulty of dealing with this transition when establishing the tone of the series and the openness to changes in the second season were topics of questioning.
Cole Hauser commented that changes in showrunners are common in the industry, which requires constant adaptation. He said that after being in business for so long, things change and people move on.
Kelly Reilly noted that at the time of the interview (May, before renewal), the second season had not yet been confirmed. She highlighted that the first season was completed with Chad Feehan in a collaborative and rewarding way, despite the difficulties, just as it was with ‘Yellowstone’. The actress emphasized that they are all creative minds working together, and that she is proud of that. However, she clarified that the decisions regarding the second season, if it happens, would not be theirs.
