Flamengo and River Plate will have a crucial meeting in Portugal to discuss the future of left-back Matias Viña. The player, currently on loan to the Argentine team, may have his contract terminated sooner than expected, despite the original contract running until December.
River Plate’s board has already shown interest in ending the loan agreement. Conversations between the clubs should be deepened in the coming weeks, especially with the clash scheduled for July 3, a friendly at the Estádio do Algarve.
The Rio club informed the Argentines that, in case of early termination, there would be a need to pay a contractual fine. Furthermore, River Plate is responsible for the athlete’s salaries until the end of the year, and is now seeking a consensus to formalize his departure.
Called up to represent Uruguay in the last World Cup, the full-back faced a period with few minutes on the field and questioned performances in Argentina. He participated in 14 games, starting 10, and received several criticisms. In the Uruguayan national team, Viña was selected in the debut against Saudi Arabia, but was replaced at half-time, remaining on the bench in the following game against Cape Verde.
Matias Viña’s loan contract with River Plate includes a buyout clause that could become mandatory depending on the team meeting certain performance targets. His contract with Flamengo, in turn, is valid until 2028.
Viña’s possible return adds complexity to Flamengo’s analysis of the left side of defense in this transfer window. Although the club is planning a renewal with Alex Sandro until the end of 2027 and Ayrton Lucas still has a current contract, an unexpected return from Viña would require new evaluations and, potentially, open discussions about the space for three full-backs in the same position, impacting planning and the salary bill.
