IOS 27 arrives with significant improvements and artificial intelligence features that transform the iPhone experience
Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) traditionally reveals new versions of its operating systems. Last year, iOS 26 brought a notable visual overhaul with the Liquid Glass design, introducing eye-catching graphic elements and new interaction physics for on-screen taps and gestures. However, its launch was marked by setbacks.
Despite the impressive aesthetics, the first beta and stable versions of iOS 26 came with performance glitches and numerous bugs, leading Apple to tone down the intensity of Liquid Glass later. When iOS 27 was introduced with few visible new features, many users saw it as a good sign, indicating the company’s focus on fixing problems.
In fact, Apple has classified iOS 27 as a stability update, featuring improved performance metrics. However, the new version of the operating system also incorporates features that deserve attention. Users who have already tested the first beta version for developers, available since the beginning of June, report that iOS 26 problems have been largely resolved.
The artificial intelligence that redefines the Siri assistant
The arrival of artificial intelligence in Siri is seen as a transformative innovation for the iPhone. The main reason is not new features compared to other AI assistants such as Gemini or Bixby, but rather because it finally overcomes the below-expected performance that the assistant has presented for years. After disappointing launches and two years of waiting for a revamped Siri, iOS 27 delivers on that promise.
Now, Siri displays exponentially greater power and intelligence. Part of this evolution can be attributed to Google’s Gemini models. The assistant is more integrated with Apple services such as Calendar, Notes and Reminders, and is capable of analyzing personal data in supported apps to provide context in your responses. Its speed is impressive, even on models like the iPhone 15 Pro Max, which is almost three years old, and Apple has already announced that the iPhone 17 Pro and future models will bring an even more improved and personalized version.
A new summon animation has also been introduced, enhancing the experience, especially on iPhones equipped with Dynamic Island. Now, to start a query, simply swipe down from the top center of the screen. While support for third-party apps is still limited, Siri is expected to expand its compatibility over time.
More speed and stability with the new iOS 27
One of the biggest criticisms of Liquid Glass was not the look itself, but the slowness that iOS 26 imposed on iPhones, including recent models that, ironically, ran complex games without crashes, but showed constant frame drops on the home screen. Even stable versions of iOS 26.5 were slow. Rumors about iOS 27 as a stability update have been confirmed.
Apple announced more than 40 performance improvements, highlighting up to 80% faster AirDrop transfers, faster image loading in the Photos app, and reduced launch times for many native apps like Safari. Even in the beta version for developers, the user experience already demonstrates notable improvements in speed and stability with iOS 27.
The new CPU scheduler, incorporated by Apple, is one of the main factors that will benefit older iPhones with the update. This functionality manages which tasks receive the most attention from the processor, keeping background activities active while ensuring maximum performance of essential processes. Given the complexity of Liquid Glass’ physics and rendering, an improvement of this size was essential, which may also justify iOS 27’s compatibility with models such as the iPhone 11.
Strengthened parental controls and child safety tools
Privacy management in Apple’s operating systems has always been a praised point, and the company already offered several security features. This year, the main focus was on developing child safety tools on iOS. While parents could already create and manage Child Accounts, iOS 27 enhances these features, offering greater control and more streamlined administration.
The “Ask to Browse” feature, which is enabled by default on iPhones with child accounts, now requires parental approval for the child to access new websites. Communications Security automatically blurs violent or nudity content in messages and video calls via FaceTime, and Apple has encouraged developers to integrate this functionality. Additionally, Time Limit is a new feature that allows parents to set usage restrictions for specific apps, such as entertainment, social networks and games, or for all categories.
In addition to child safety improvements, iOS 27 maintains its comprehensive set of privacy options. The new Siri is now capable of analyzing video recordings from security cameras and creating descriptions, making it easier to identify important events. As usual, processing that does not occur directly on the device is carried out securely by Private Cloud Compute.
The freedom to customize the Liquid Glass interface in iOS 27
The Liquid Glass design system has been perhaps the most hotly debated iOS update in recent years. While some users loved it, others found it a hindrance to readability and performance. Apple tried to strike a balance between form and function with some updates, but that ended up not completely satisfying everyone. In iOS 26, Liquid Glass has become a compromise, noticeably less transparent and with very limited customization options.
The big new feature is the introduction of a slider that allows users to adjust the intensity of the Liquid Glass effect system-wide. It is now possible to increase transparency to the maximum, replicating Apple’s original vision for the design, or opt for a frosted glass look, which provides greater readability for those who prefer it.
Overall, the combination of the freedom to choose the intensity of transparency effects with notably more fluid performance transforms the iOS 27 usage experience. Another change, less commented on, is the obligation for all third-party applications to use the new keyboard, something that was previously restricted to some applications that adapted to Liquid Glass guidelines.
New features and additional system optimizations
Siri now has its own application, where conversations, which include generative artificial intelligence, are stored, allowing users to resume them at any time. The Messages app gained quick and intelligent actions based on context; for example, a reminder in a conversation can be added to the Reminders app with a single tap. Another useful feature is Call Context, which displays relevant information on a card while the user is on a call.
In addition to greater agility in the Photos app, iOS 27 introduced two new editing tools with artificial intelligence, which join the existing “Cleaning”. The “Extend” mode allows you to expand the limits of an image, while the “Frame” tool allows you to adjust the photo’s perspective. “Cleaning” now offers a “High Quality” mode, likely offloading processing to the cloud for sharper results. All three of these tools employ generative AI.
Users can now minimize the clock on the lock screen, aligning it with the date, which is ideal for those who want to make their wallpaper stand out. Switching between different lock screens is also faster. Although the initial beta version still has some bugs, the agility and stability observed at this stage already generate high expectations for the official launch of the stable version of iOS 27.
