A series of large-scale thefts hit Tesla’s Gigafactory, located in Nevada, resulting in the embezzlement of millions of dollars worth of batteries. Criminals managed to remove trucks loaded with products from Elon Musk’s factory, without apparent resistance, which raised serious questions about weaknesses in the company’s logistics and protection systems.

Authorities confirmed that the incidents extend back to December 2023. The preferred targets were heavy vehicles carrying Powerwall 3 residential energy storage systems and battery cells intended for electric cars. At least 11 major robberies have already been documented, most of them concentrated in January this year.

Criminals used false documents in a planned scheme to invade the factory

Investigations indicate that those responsible for the crimes pretended to be employees of a legitimate transport company. They used falsified driver’s licenses and cargo documents to gain unrestricted access to the factory’s checkpoints. In this way, they managed to escape with high-value materials, with nine similar episodes occurring in January alone.

The scale of the thefts is considered significant. In one case, for example, two trailers of Powerwall, valued at more than $950,000, were taken. These vehicles were discovered empty at a distance of 800 kilometers from the production unit, suggesting the existence of a well-established criminal infrastructure for the transportation and rapid concealment of merchandise.

To date, three individuals have been arrested on suspicion of involvement in the crimes, and are accused of possessing and selling stolen goods. The police work with the hypothesis that a large organized criminal group is behind the operation. This type of attack was not restricted to Tesla; other technology companies in the region, such as Redwood Materials, were also reported to have been the target of similar incidents, highlighting a pattern of organized crime in the area.

Warns buyers about the risks of stolen batteries in the parallel market

Some of the stolen components have already been identified on resale platforms. However, Tesla has issued a warning for parallel market battery buyers to proceed with caution. The company said it has the ability to lock the serial numbers of stolen devices, making official activation and access to future software updates impossible.

The episodes represent not only a considerable financial loss for Tesla, but also a significant damage to its image. The fact that one of the global leaders in technology had its logistics chain compromised by a fraud, which, although apparently simple, proved to be highly effective, raises questions about the security of large operations. The company is expected to carry out a complete audit of its receiving and shipping processes at the Nevada Gigafactory and its other facilities.
