A former mattress salesman, Nick Littlehales, dedicated himself to investigating how excellent nighttime rest could optimize human performance. His perspective transcended simple commerce, defending the thesis that adequate sleep was crucial for energy and personal performance.

Attracted by the sporting universe and the relevance of muscle recovery, Littlehales identified a unique opportunity to apply his expertise in the field of football. It was in the 1990s that he approached Alex Ferguson, then legendary Manchester United coach, who was completing 27 years at the helm of the club.

Ferguson, known for his demands and tireless pursuit of excellence in the preparation of his athletes, noticed a gap in his methodology. Despite masterfully managing nutrition, training and physical condition, the coach lacked data on the athletes’ sleep patterns. This realization paved the way for a new strategy, aiming to expand the success of Manchester United, a club that, under his management, racked up 13 Premier League trophies.

Littlehales recalled the turnaround in his career during an interview with Sky Sports in 2017. “I went from selling beds to being a consultant to Sir Alex Ferguson and Manchester United’s famous Generation of ’92, discussing the best tactics for rest and recovery. Alex [Ferguson] always welcomed any idea that could boost the team’s performance,” said the expert.

Through his experience, Littlehales convinced the renowned Scottish coach of the essentiality of valuing players’ rest. This perspective was revolutionary at the time, especially because it preceded modern sleep monitoring systems, now routine in football coaching staffs, by decades. His pioneering method, based on observation and experience, without the vast amount of data currently available, was a foundation for contemporary sports science, paving the way for athletes like Cristiano Ronaldo to seek every millisecond of advantage.

During the 1990s, Nick Littlehales introduced significant adaptations to Manchester United’s routine. He modified the resting environment, adjusting the temperature and brightness of the bedrooms, selecting ideal mattresses and pillows, establishing rituals before going to bed and, with technological advances, advising reducing exposure to screens before sleeping.

The expert shared that the collaboration with Alex Ferguson began in a pre-season period, when the coach sought to optimize athletes’ rest between intense training sessions. The measure found was the implementation of a dedicated space for naps within the Manchester United training center.

The participation of the iconic “Generation of 92”, with figures such as David Beckham and Ryan Giggs, was decisive in ensuring that the practice was well received by the other players. According to Littlehales, the plan was designed on an experimental basis, without a consolidated sleep consultancy format, but it has established itself as a watershed in football physical preparation.

Cristiano Ronaldo adopts approach to optimize physical and mental performance

Among the athletes who embraced Nick Littlehales’ innovative techniques with conviction, Cristiano Ronaldo stands out. The famous Portuguese striker applies the sleep guru’s methodology, opting for brief periods of rest distributed throughout the day. This strategy aims to control stress and boost recovery, serving as an essential complement to your training discipline and meticulous diet.

Speaking to Sky Sports, also in 2017, Littlehales explained his arrival at Real Madrid. “My invitation came after a deep collaboration with Chelsea, alongside sports scientist Jack Nayler, Paul Clement and Carlo Ancelotti. When they met again at Real Madrid, they expressed a great desire for me to talk to the team. Ronaldo accompanied me and, aware of my work at Manchester United, showed a significant interest”, he explained.

The 90-minute sleep cycles, which emulate the length of a football game, are carefully organized to ensure Cristiano Ronaldo experiences all stages of rest: light, deep and REM. This last phase is essential for mental balance, fixing memories and emotional processing.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s diet is extremely controlled, with the exclusion of five categories of food: sugars, fast food, alcohol, starches and flour. The athlete is supervised by a team of specialists who monitor his diet daily. This routine, although rigorous, is considered replicable and affordable for the general public.

R90 Program redefines rest for high-performance athletes

The R90 program, designed by Littlehales, presents an innovative approach to sleep. Instead of prioritizing a rigid daily duration of eight hours, the technique proposes that rest be divided into cycles of approximately 90 minutes. The goal is to accumulate around 35 of these cycles weekly. Thus, insufficient nights of sleep can be compensated for in subsequent days, strategically integrating recovery into training planning.

“The essence lies in sleeping cycles. You need to complete 35 sleep cycles per week. We look at cycles in 90-minute blocks. Five cycles per day equals 7.5 hours. This may involve three or four continuous sleep periods and a short afternoon nap. The goal is to maintain an average of five cycles every 24 hours,” explained Nick Littlehales.

The expert added that “athletes can examine the week to identify how to optimize their recovery periods within these cycles. Factors such as hotel accommodation and pre-game tension tend to reduce opportunities for rest, making more detailed planning imperative to ensure effective rest.”

The methodology created by Littlehales achieved great success in the football scene. The consultant has built an extensive trajectory, providing services to numerous top federations and clubs, such as the English Federation, the Premier League, Manchester United, Real Madrid, Arsenal and Liverpool, among other prominent global organizations.
