Man sentenced to 17 years in prison for stepdaughter’s death and faking drowning
A 28-year-old man received a sentence of 17 years and four months in prison, in an initially closed regime, for having murdered his own stepdaughter, a child just three years old. The crime occurred in the city of Alvorada, located in the Metropolitan Region of Porto Alegre, in 2017. The verdict, handed down by the Jury Court last Tuesday (30), established the immediate execution of the sentence, preventing any appeal by the defendant at liberty, almost a decade after the crime.
As pointed out in the accusation formalized by the Public Ministry of Rio Grande do Sul, the tragic event occurred in February 2017, specifically in the town of Vila Formosa. At that moment, the victim’s mother left home for a brief period, entrusting her daughter to the care of her then partner.

Shortly afterwards, the man called the woman, claiming that the child had drowned in the bathtub while he was looking for a towel. Despite rescue efforts, the little girl did not survive and died in the hospital. However, subsequent investigations revealed a completely different narrative.

The autopsy examination performed on the child indicated the presence of multiple bruises on various parts of the body. The real cause of death was identified as intra-abdominal hemorrhage, a finding completely inconsistent with the story of drowning told by the stepfather.

The trial session was led by judge Marcos Henrique Reichelt, responsible for the 1st Criminal Court of Alvorada. He ordered the prisoner to be kept in prison immediately after reading the decision.
