A recent study suggests that a personal liking for the taste and smell of onions may be connected to lower blood pressure and a lower likelihood of developing type 2 diabetes. However, the researchers caution that this finding does not represent a direct solution, but rather an advancement in the methodology of research into how diet influences human health.

The influence of taste and smell genes on food choices

Are food choices shaped solely by customs? Unpublished research, conducted by scientists at the University of Queensland, in Australia, points out that genes related to taste and smell also play a significant role. These genetic elements dictate the foods we select and, by extension, can clarify the relationship between diet and the emergence of chronic illnesses.

Among the various foods analyzed, onions aroused special interest among scientists. The investigation indicated that individuals with a predilection for the taste and aroma of onions tended to have reduced blood pressure and a lower risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Those responsible for the study, however, reinforce that this finding does not imply that just ingesting onions provides protection against pathologies.

The University of Queensland team created an innovative genetic methodology with the purpose of improving the analysis of the health impacts of certain foods. The foundation of this new approach lies in the genes that control taste and smell.

“Identifying whether a specific food actually causes a disease or is just related to it is a huge challenge in the area of nutritional epidemiology,” said Dr. Daniel Hwang, a researcher at the Institute of Molecular Biosciences at the University of Queensland.

The expert highlighted that standard observational studies often demonstrate connections between food and well-being, but often fail to clearly establish a cause-and-effect relationship. This is a critical point in research, as several external factors, or “confounders”, can influence the results, making it difficult to isolate the direct impact of a specific food.

“We established a scientific framework that is based on the genes of taste and smell, aiming to help researchers understand more clearly how diet contributes to the development of chronic illnesses”, explained the scientist.

Discoveries about onions and the relationship with blood pressure and diabetes

The research used information from the UK Biobank, a vast biomedical database. Scientists investigated 325 genes linked to taste and smell, as well as their correlations with preferences and consumption of 140 types of food in a group of more than 160,000 adults, with ages ranging from 37 to 73 years. The findings were later compared with those of a different group of 25-year-olds, participants in the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children.

The detailed analysis demonstrated that genes that affect the way we perceive taste and smell can serve as a valuable tool for assessing the connection between diet and the emergence of disease. Specifically in relation to onions, it was found that individuals who liked its flavor and aroma were more likely to have positive blood pressure indicators and a reduced risk of type 2 diabetes.

“Taste and smell constitute the two primary biological factors that shape each individual’s eating decisions and dietary regimen,” Dr. Hwang highlighted.

The research team integrated genetic analysis with the Mendelian randomization technique, an approach that exploits the genetic variations inherent in humans to more accurately differentiate cause-and-effect relationships from simple correlations.

“Our purpose is to support scientists in unraveling the intricate task of separating causality from mere correlation,” said Dr. Hwang.

Impact of diet on global chronic diseases

Those responsible for the study indicate that inadequate eating habits contribute to around 11 million early deaths annually on a global scale, largely associated with cardiovascular problems and cancer. Simultaneously, the growth in obesity, diabetes and cancer statistics has intensified pressure on global health systems.

Therefore, researchers are committed to developing instruments that enable a more accurate assessment of the influence of food on the human body. Dr. Hwang expresses confidence that this innovative methodology can simplify such investigations.

“Our research structure provides scientists with a new way to examine the connection between the foods consumed and the emergence of diseases, without the need to conduct highly complex experiments”, highlighted the researcher.

It is critical to understand that the findings of this study do not suggest that onions are a cure for high blood pressure or diabetes. Although it can be a beneficial component of food, the risk of developing diseases is determined by a series of elements, such as overall diet, weight, physical activity, quality of sleep, use of stimulants and genetic predisposition itself. However, research highlights that our food preferences can provide deeper insights into our health than previously realized.
