Study on Nintendo Switch 2 OLED advances, but launch is not guaranteed
Nintendo is considering the development of an OLED version of the Switch 2 console, as shown by recent rumors released this Monday, July 13, 2026, but the project does not yet have final approval. Reports from the South Korean press indicate that the manufacturer is analyzing this new variant to extend the device’s useful life, keeping the launch under uncertainty.
This potential version comes shortly after the Japanese company confirmed a Switch 2 model with a battery that can be removed. New sources suggest that Nintendo is also exploring an edition with an OLED screen, which would be supplied by Samsung Display, following the collaboration already established in the previous generation.

International sources detail that the new Nintendo Switch 2 with OLED would use a Full HD rigid panel, with a resolution of 1,920 by 1,080 pixels. If approved, development would begin in 2026, with large-scale production projected for late 2027 or early 2028.

Despite detailed planning, a major obstacle remains for the OLED version: the production cost. The difference in value between LCD and OLED screens remains high, a scenario intensified by the recent increase in the price of components such as memories and semiconductors, crucial for the manufacture of electronic devices.
This scenario forces Nintendo to analyze with great caution the relationship between the necessary investment and the expected financial return, before granting approval for a new revision of its hardware. Internally, there is still no official decision on the launch.

However, this strategy of launching variants to extend the console’s useful life is nothing new for the company. The first Nintendo Switch, launched in 2017 with an LCD screen, had the Switch Lite in 2019 and, later, an OLED version in 2021, maintaining consumer interest throughout that generation.
For the Switch 2, however, the current situation differs significantly. While all editions of the original console operated at 720p HD resolution, the recent Switch 2 model now offers a 1,080p Full HD LCD screen. Thus, the main innovation of the potential new variant would be OLED technology, which provides improved contrast, more intense blacks and notably more vivid colors.
According to rumors, Samsung Display is already preparing to be, once again, the supplier of panels for Nintendo, as happened in the previous generation. The South Korean company shows great interest in securing this contract, if the Japanese manufacturer decides to move forward with the project.
So far, Nintendo has not officially confirmed any of this information about the OLED version. Therefore, the existence of the Switch 2 OLED remains a possibility under study, without any guarantee that it will be launched on the market.
