Fans of the horror genre recently got their first glimpse of “Other Mommy,” the new supernatural thriller starring Jessica Chastain. Universal Pictures unveiled the launch trailer, directed by Rob Savage, during cinema screenings of Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey.” This exclusive preview is an adaptation of the acclaimed novel “Incidents Around the House” by Josh Malerman. Although it was originally scheduled to premiere on May 8, 2026, Universal rescheduled the release to October 9, 2026, guaranteeing the film a prominent position in the Halloween season.
The initial trailer reveal is limited to movie theaters this weekend, but the content is expected to be made available online soon to a wider audience.
The feature film “Other Mommy” represents Rob Savage’s return to the horror universe, continuing his successful trajectory after films such as “The Boogeyman” and “Host”. The production is an adaptation of “Incidents Around the House”, by Josh Malerman, a work that quickly became one of the author’s most popular titles, following the impact of “Bird Box”.
The main cast features Jessica Chastain, accompanied by Jay Duplass, Dichen Lachman, Karen Allen, Sean Kaufman, Adam Silver, Carrie Dimaculangan and young newcomer Arabella Olivia Clark, who plays the eight-year-old character Belle.
The central plot follows Bela, a girl of just eight years old, who is already facing difficulties in her family life due to her parents’ unstable marriage. She begins to witness the emergence of an evil presence, whom she refers to as “Other Mommy”, who emerges from her closet every night. The entity constantly asks the same question: “Can I enter your heart?” As Bela refuses, the supernatural visitor intensifies her aggression, putting her entire family at risk and forcing the young woman to face an evil determined to break family ties.
The film’s premise has already generated comparisons with “Mama”, a 2013 feature film, also a horror film with the participation of Jessica Chastain, which addresses the theme of children haunted by a mysterious maternal figure.
The production is a collaboration between Atomic Monster and Blumhouse, in association with Spin a Black Yarn for Universal Pictures. James Wan is the producer, while Rob Savage and Josh Malerman serve as executive producers, alongside Michael Clear, Judson Scott, Macdara Kelleher and Ryan Lewis. Project oversight for Atomic Monster is Alayna Glasthal, and the script was written by Nathan Elston, known for his work on “Succession.”
With the exclusive screening of the first trailer before “The Odyssey” and a strategically set release date for October, aligned with the Halloween season, “Other Mommy” cements itself as one of the most anticipated supernatural horror releases of the year.
