A new book reveals that Prince William was very angry after a suggestion from King Charles III and Queen Camilla that Kate Middleton change the spelling of her first name upon joining the royal family. The incident, which demonstrates the monarchy’s attention to the details of the image, occurred on August 10, 2026, according to the publication.
Christopher Andersen, author of the biography “Kate! The Courage, Grace, and Power of the Woman Who Will Be Queen”, detailed that King Charles and Queen Camilla had a royal monogram with intertwined “C’s” under a crown. Their concern was that a third “C” in the royal coat of arms would be excessive. They questioned whether Kate would mind changing the spelling of “Catherine” to “Katherine.”
Andersen further reported that, angered by yet another demand from above, which was essentially aimed at pleasing Camilla, an angry William responded on his wife’s behalf. He called the request to his father “insulting”, not just to Kate, but to his entire family.
The importance of image and William’s constant defense
A Kensington Palace spokesperson said it does not comment on books.
Andersen commented that the nature of Charles and Camilla’s request, regarding the number of letters “C” in the royal coats of arms, highlights the extreme importance of the image and brand for members of the royal family. “The monarchy is actually a big game of one-upmanship,” he said, noting that since the beginning of their relationship, “William has been fighting for Kate.”
The safety of the Princess of Wales has always been William’s main concern, who spoke out vehemently in her defense after the publication of photos of her without clothes, taken while sunbathing in France in 2012.

Andersen claimed that William “angrily ordered Palace lawyers to sue and even wanted those involved to be criminally prosecuted under French privacy laws.” He added that when the couple started a family, William made sure Kate was not forced to take on an excessive royal workload if it meant spending a lot of time away from her children.
Personal preference for Catherine and royal expectations
However, the author pointed out that the king and Camilla “expected her to accept because she has always been a pleasant and cooperative team player.” They didn’t consider that Kate prefers to be known as Catherine and has a strong attachment to her parents’ given name.
Although much of the world knows her by her nickname, Kate, her real name is Catherine.
The princess is “genuinely fond” of Charles and assumed that the “absurd idea” had come from someone else, as explained by Andersen, who also said that she did not harbor any resentment against him.

“Plus, it wasn’t long before they had to deal with their concurrent cancer diagnoses, which put everything else into severe perspective,” Andersen added.
Kate’s strong personality and expert perspective
Although Middleton appears “kind and compassionate,” she possesses an “iron will,” the author noted.
Andersen stated that “Kate is very sure of who she is and how she wants to be perceived by the outside world.” For her, “changing your formal name for such a bizarre, almost comical reason was an unacceptable limit.”

British presenter and photographer Helena Chard described the issue as a “non-starter” and a “lost cause”, commenting that Charles and Camilla acted with a “business mentality” as she was known worldwide as Kate.
“Although it is a futile effort, I can see both sides of the coin,” she admitted, clarifying that William was not only offended by his wife, but also by his in-laws.
Conflict over name minimized by larger issues
However, the “concerns were ignored. It wasn’t important enough to cause a fight. They had bigger problems to deal with.”
Royal commentator Ian Pelham Turner called the episode a possible “volatile moment” between Camilla and the princess upon joining the family. He added that, “These days, William was there to protect her. Since then, Kate has managed to remain a step back when Charles and Camilla are around so as not to upstage them.”

He noted, however, that more recently the princess, 44, is “building a stronger brand for herself as William attempts to take over the reigns of royalty.”
