Study links emotional lyrics to intelligence, but personality dominates musical taste

Recent research, published on August 9, 2026, explored the intriguing connection between the type of music a person likes and their cognitive ability. Scientists from Germany and Switzerland sought to understand whether musical preferences could offer clues about individual intellect. They analyzed listening data from nearly two hundred adults and compared it with results from online tests of general cognitive abilities.

Preliminary results suggest that people considered more intelligent tend to lean toward songs that have sad lyrics or greater emotional complexity. This observation was noted regardless of musical genre, which challenges some popular beliefs.

Recent study reveals preference for complex letters in more intelligent people

The investigation conducted in 2026 by psychologists from Germany and Switzerland analyzed the musical choices of 185 adults, comparing them with their scores on cognitive assessments. The main objective was to identify possible patterns or correlations between sound preferences and intelligence levels. The most notable finding was the inclination of participants with a higher cognitive index for songs that had a more melancholic or intricate lyrical content.

This finding contradicts the notion that a certain musical genre would be directly linked to intelligence. The researchers noted that the preference for complex lyrics was not restricted to classical music listeners, nor was there evidence that people with lower intelligence scores preferred genres such as pop or rock. The emotional complexity of the lyrics emerged as a more relevant factor than the musical style itself.

How Personality Connects to the Type of Music You Listen to

The recent findings complement previous work, carried out in 2003 by psychologists Prof. Peter Rentfrow and Prof. Samuel Gosling. They had identified that people’s musical tastes fall into four broad categories, each strongly associated with specific personality traits. This seminal study showed that, although intelligence may have some correlation with specific aspects, personality exerts a much more decisive influence on an individual’s musical choices.

The preference for certain types of music largely reflects who we are and how we interact with the world. For example, a person with high openness to new experiences and great curiosity tends to seek enriching activities, such as reading and traveling. This same inclination to explore and learn also shapes your musical palate, directing you toward styles that offer more depth and intellectual stimulation.

Four major categories that group musical preferences

Prof. Peter Rentfrow and Prof. Samuel Gosling categorized musical preferences into broad groups, each with its own distinct characteristics. Understanding these groupings helps map out how music aligns with different psychological profiles. These classifications provide a framework for understanding the diversity of tastes.

The four main categories identified are:

  • Reflective and complex:It includes genres such as classical music, jazz, and blues, often associated with individuals who appreciate introspection and depth.
  • Intense and rebellious:It covers styles such as rock and heavy metal, commonly linked to more daring and independent personalities.
  • Lively and conventional:It encompasses pop and country, attracting those looking for music with catchy rhythms and more accessible themes.
  • Energetic and rhythmic:It focuses on hip-hop and electronic music, preferred by people who value the energy of movement and dance.

Dismantling stereotypes: what the musical genre really says about intelligence

There is a common stereotype that listening to classical music automatically indicates higher intelligence, while genres like pop or country would be associated with lower intellect. However, research indicates that this simplification is inaccurate. There is no solid evidence that a specific music genre makes someone more or less intelligent.

Instead, the preference for certain musical genres, such as country or electronic music, may be more related to social and hedonistic motivations. People who enjoy these styles may be more driven by the joy of dancing or social interaction in festive settings rather than a supposed “lack of intelligence.” Conversely, those attracted to deep and melancholic lyrics tend to dedicate more time to reflection or continuous learning.

The complexity of defining intelligence and researchers’ reservations

It is essential to analyze the results of the 2026 study with caution. The research was carried out with a relatively small sample of German adults and did not consider several factors that could influence the results, such as the age of the participants. These methodological limitations suggest that the conclusions should be interpreted as a starting point rather than as absolute truths.

Intelligence, in itself, is a characteristic that is notoriously difficult to define and measure, being influenced by a multiplicity of factors. Furthermore, musical preferences go far beyond a simple cognitive correlation. They are deeply rooted in personal identity and the feeling of belonging to social groups, elements that often surpass any relationship with measurable intellectual capacity. Musical choices are ultimately a complex reflection of human individuality.
