On July 18, 2024, Apple released the new versions of its operating systems: iOS 26.6.1, iPadOS 26.6.1 and macOS Tahoe 26.6.2. The updates arrive with the main objective of correcting almost 30 important security vulnerabilities, reinforcing user protection against possible threats.

Unusual frequency of Apple updates raises security alarm

This is the third security release that Apple has made in just three weeks, a pace considered atypical for the company. The high frequency of updates raises the question that artificial intelligence (AI) has been finding security flaws at a much faster pace than the tech giant’s traditional release schedule can absorb. The pressure to patch these vulnerabilities is directly impacting your patching cadence.

Understand the details of vulnerabilities patched in systems

Apple’s security support document details a number of crucial fixes. Among them, an audio flaw stands out that could allow the user’s confidential data to be leaked through a malicious application. There is also an image vulnerability that could facilitate the execution of arbitrary code and three separate flaws in the system’s kernel. WebKit, Safari’s rendering engine, was the target of 21 of the 29 vulnerabilities described, with the potential to cause memory corruption or browser crashes. Nine of the fixed flaws were attributed to OpenAI Codex Security.

On iOS, a specific flaw in telephony has also been addressed. It could allow an attacker with privileged access to the network to bypass IPSec authentication and, therefore, intercept the user’s network traffic.

Why Immediate Updating Is Crucial for Apple Users

Although Apple has not released information that the vulnerabilities have been actively exploited to date, the recommendation is clear: users should update their devices to the new versions of iOS, iPadOS and macOS as soon as possible. Since flaws are publicly disclosed, there is a greater risk that cybercriminals will attempt to exploit devices that have not yet been updated.

What changes for you is the guarantee of greater security for your personal data and the stable operation of your device. The update protects against unauthorized access, information leaks, and the possibility of malicious software controlling parts of your system.

Older devices also receive attention from Apple

Apple also showed concern for users of older models. Along with the new updates, iOS 18.7.10 and iPadOS 18.7.10 were released, intended for devices that are not compatible with iOS 26 and iPadOS 26. However, equivalent macOS Sequoia or macOS Sonoma updates were not released for Macs that cannot run macOS Tahoe, which means that some users of older Macs may not have the latest fixes.

How to install new software versions on your device

  • Open the “Settings” app on your device.
  • Tap the “General” section.
  • Select “Software Update”.
  • The system will check and present the update available for installation. It is recommended to carry out the process with the device connected to a Wi-Fi network and with sufficient battery power.
