Meta launched Muse, a personal artificial intelligence agent designed to assist consumers in the United States with routine digital tasks, on September 8, 2026. The release follows less than two weeks after the corporation agreed to pay an $18 billion multistate settlement resolving allegations regarding consumer harms on social networks.

Operating Muse requires consumers to share unprecedented amounts of private records with Meta. The agent functions by linking directly to individual accounts across external applications like calendars, email boxes, and payment gateways. It also requests access to services managing fitness tracking, home automation, retail purchases, and musical streaming.

Meta placed a substantial commercial bet on technology that performs concrete assignments for people, departing from previous conversational chatbots like ChatGPT that primarily answered text questions or offered informal digital companionship.

The software drafts communications, reserves travel bookings, fills out digital forms, builds schedules, and converts social video recipes into shopping records. It also completes direct merchant payments using Link by Stripe to provide explicit transaction protections for buyers. Meta plans upcoming technical integrations with 1Password and Shopify through Shop Pay.

Users authorize connected external tools individually to keep the selection transparent during setup. The system operates on Meta’s Muse Spark engine, relying on native connectors, public API protocols, or standard web browser navigation whenever dedicated connections do not exist.

Distribution starts through muse.ai on the web, mobile applications on iOS and Android, and messaging threads inside WhatsApp. The developer plans to deploy the agent to Meta smart glasses later. Initial access requires entering a credit card, though basic usage remains free.

Two premium tiers exist for high-volume users, offering the Power plan at $20 monthly and the Maximum tier at $100 each month. An integrated digital meter monitors consumed allocations and informs subscribers when complimentary allowances expire.

Muse operates continuously in the background after users exit the interface.

Other companies build similar tools. Major technology enterprises and emerging software startups currently develop automated agents intended to handle personal routines.

Several developers deploy browser extensions or services like Gemini Spark and Claude Cowork to handle user tasks directly. Competitors also install automated assistance within communication networks like SMS and Apple iMessage. Meta simultaneously operates within this space across WhatsApp.

Broad operational powers prompt widespread scrutiny regarding personal data privacy. Early testers of rival assistant Instinct discovered conditions granting an irrevocable, perpetual license permitting the vendor to access, reproduce, store, host, distribute, and alter user data for machine training.

Meta states that Muse executes processes inside an isolated environment called Muse Secure VM, which isolates execution through a separate Sentinel security layer.

This architecture blocks the agent from viewing saved passwords or private banking credentials. Meta also insists that interaction data and conversations remain separate from its advertising network.

Independent security researchers have not yet verified the internal safeguards detailed in technical documentation published by Meta.

Past regulatory penalties challenge user adoption for Meta

Prior corporate controversies cast doubt on whether Meta can secure sufficient consumer trust despite published architecture claims. The company faces persistent public skepticism regarding its operational conduct.

Federal regulators repeatedly disciplined the enterprise for privacy violations over past decades. The FTC finalized an agreement in 2011 concerning unauthorized public disclosure of private data, followed by a $5 billion penalty in 2019 covering eight individual privacy breaches. The agency subsequently brought fresh charges in 2023 alleging breaches of that 2019 order.

Engineering failures compounded these regulatory disputes, including an incident in 2019 where Meta stored unencrypted consumer passwords in readable text. Public recollection also remains tied to Cambridge Analytica collecting millions of Facebook user profiles without authorization.

Congressional inquiries repeatedly questioned executives about safety protocols for younger audiences, setting off state actions including a $942 million legal penalty in New Mexico, an August settlement involving 29 states, and multiple active personal-injury lawsuits filed by school districts against major technology platforms.

Meta implemented personalization features to help individuals feel more comfortable operating the agent. Consumers can modify the name, select custom visual avatars, and define tone settings for interactions. These options complement technical documentation addressing consumer apprehensions.

Customer data sharing will determine whether this personal configuration and daily task assistance convince the public to trust Meta.
