Michael Douglas reveals secret Kathleen Turner affair in new memoir
Actor Michael Douglas confessed in an excerpt from his upcoming autobiography that he and Kathleen Turner engaged in a secret romantic affair during the 1984 filming of Romancing the Stone. The 82-year-old producer stated that both actors actively maintained a false version of their history for 40 years, publicly denying any physical involvement to protect his household.
The admission came to light on Friday (2) through preview passages of his memoir, One Helluva Ride, published ahead of its scheduled release. Douglas described how the off-screen relationship blossomed while filming on location in Mexico, noting that director Robert Zemeckis and co-star Danny DeVito had no knowledge of their late-night encounters in Turner’s hotel room.

“The truth is that during the production of Romancing the Stone, Kathleen and I fell hard for each other and began a relationship,” Douglas wrote. He added that the established public narrative had deliberately covered up the relationship: “The official story went as follows: Yes, we confessed, we had amazing chemistry. Yes, we were both, as Kathleen said, ‘terrible flirts,’ and yes, we were both tempted, but nothing ever happened between us. That was a lie. It was a lie meant to protect my wife and son, a lie we told the world for 40 years.”
Michael Douglas describes the set confrontation that ended the affair
Douglas believed his marriage was effectively over at the time of the shoot, but the situation shifted abruptly when his first wife, Diandra Luker, arrived unannounced at the film set in Mexico. She brought their son, Cameron Douglas, who was 5 years old at the time. Luker grew suspicious of the interactions between the two leads and requested a private conversation with Turner, changing the trajectory of the production.

“At some point, she was alone with Kathleen and made it clear to her that we were still married. Her view of the terms of our separation was different from mine. This gave Kathleen pause. She didn’t want to interfere,” Douglas recalled. Turner decided to step away from the involvement to avoid breaking up the marriage. Douglas subsequently chose to reconcile with Luker for the sake of their young son, an attempt at domestic stability that he now characterizes as an error: “After that visit, Kathleen and I ended things, and I went back to Diandra. I did it for Cameron, but we shouldn’t have gotten back together. After that first split it was never the same between us ever again.”

Decades of professional partnership between Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner
The fallout from the affair carried immediate professional complications for the sequel, The Jewel of the Nile, released in 1985. The 72-year-old actress attempted to back out of the production to avoid working closely with Douglas again, but existing contractual obligations forced her to report to set. During that subsequent shoot, both performers rebuilt their connection into a lasting platonic friendship that endured across multiple decades.
The duo went on to co-star as warring spouses in the 1989 dark comedy The War of the Roses, alongside DeVito, and reunited on screen in 2021 for the television series The Kominsky Method. Prior to the publication of the new book, Turner had previously written and spoken about their powerful mutual attraction while making Romancing the Stone, but had consistently maintained that the relationship stopped short of an affair due to Luker’s presence. The manuscript of the autobiography nearly faced delays before going to print due to an extensive and rigorous legal vetting process conducted in both the United States and the United Kingdom because of the intimate personal revelations.
